CEB 1 Before the Festival of Passover, Jesus knew that his time had come to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them fully. CEB 2 Jesus and his disciples were sharing the evening meal. The devil had already provoked Judas, Simon Iscariot's son, to betray Jesus. And during supper CEB 3 Jesus knew the Father had given everything into his hands and that he had come from God and was returning to God. NRS 3 Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going to God, CEB 4 So he got up from the table and took off his robes. Picking up a linen towel, he tied it around his waist. NRS 4 got up from the table, took off his outer robe, and tied a towel around himself. CEB 5 Then he poured water into a washbasin and began to wash the disciples' feet, drying them with the towel he was wearing. NRS 5 Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet and to wipe them with the towel that was tied around him. CEB 6 When Jesus came to Simon Peter, Peter said to him, "Lord, are you going to wash my feet?" NRS 6 He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, "Lord, are you going to wash my feet?" CEB 7 Jesus replied, "You don't understand what I'm doing now, but you will understand later." NRS 7 Jesus answered, "You do not know now what I am doing, but later you will understand." CEB 8 "No!" Peter said. "You will never wash my feet!" Jesus replied, "Unless I wash you, you won't have a place with me." NRS 8 Peter said to him, "You will never wash my feet." Jesus answered, "Unless I wash you, you have no share with me." CEB 9 Simon Peter said, "Lord, not only my feet but also my hands and my head!" NRS 9 Simon Peter said to him, "Lord, not my feet only but also my hands and my head!" CEB 10 Jesus responded, "Those who have bathed need only to have their feet washed, because they are completely clean. You disciples are clean, but not every one of you." NRS 10 Jesus said to him, "One who has bathed does not need to wash, except for the feet, but is entirely clean. And you are clean, though not all of you." CEB 11 He knew who would betray him. That's why he said, "Not every one of you is clean." NRS 11 For he knew who was to betray him; for this reason he said, "Not all of you are clean." CEB 12 After he washed the disciples' feet, he put on his robes and returned to his place at the table. He said to them, “Do you know what I've done for you? NRS 12 After he had washed their feet, had put on his robe, and had returned to the table, he said to them, "Do you know what I have done to you? CEB 13 You call me ‘Teacher' and ‘Lord,' and you speak correctly, because I am. NRS 13 You call me Teacher and Lord—and you are right, for that is what I am. CEB 14 If I, your Lord and teacher, have washed your feet, you too must wash each other's feet. NRS 14 So if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. CEB 15 I have given you an example: Just as I have done, you also must do. NRS 15 For I have set you an example, that you also should do as I have done to you. CEB 16 I assure you, servants aren't greater than their master, nor are those who are sent greater than the one who sent them. NRS 16 Very truly, I tell you, servants are not greater than their master, nor are messengers greater than the one who sent them. CEB 17 Since you know these things, you will be happy if you do them. NRS 17 If you know these things, you are blessed if you do them.
