John 16

WNT 1 "These things I have spoken to you in order to clear stumbling-blocks out of your path. NIV 1 "All this I have told you so that you will not go astray. WNT 2 You will be excluded from the synagogues; nay more, the time is coming when any one who has murdered one of you will suppose he is offering service to God. NIV 2 They will put you out of the synagogue; in fact, a time is coming when anyone who kills you will think he is offering a service to God. WNT 3 And they will do these things because they have failed to recognize the Father and to discover who I am. NIV 3 They will do such things because they have not known the Father or me. WNT 4 But I have spoken these things to you in order that when the time for their accomplishment comes you may remember them, and may recollect that I told you. I did not, however, tell you all this at first, because I was still with you. NIV 4 I have told you this, so that when the time comes you will remember that I warned you. I did not tell you this at first because I was with you. WNT 5 But now I an returning to Him who sent me; and not one of you asks me where I am going. NIV 5 "Now I am going to him who sent me, yet none of you asks me, 'Where are you going?' WNT 6 But grief has filled your hearts because I have said all this to you. NIV 6 Because I have said these things, you are filled with grief. WNT 7 "Yet it is the truth that I am telling you--it is to your advantage that I go away. For unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you. NIV 7 But I tell you the truth: It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. WNT 8 And He, when He comes, will convict the world in respect of sin, of righteousness, and of judgement; -- NIV 8 When he comes, he will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment: WNT 9 of sin, because they do not believe in me; NIV 9 in regard to sin, because men do not believe in me; WNT 10 of righteousness, because I am going to the Father, and you will no longer see me; NIV 10 in regard to righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer; WNT 11 of judgement, because the Prince of this world is under sentence. NIV 11 and in regard to judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned. WNT 12 "I have much more to say to you, but you are unable at present to bear the burden of it. NIV 12 "I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. WNT 13 But when He has come--the Spirit of Truth--He will guide you into all the truth. For He will not speak as Himself originating what He says, but all that He hears He will speak, and He will make known the future to you. NIV 13 But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. WNT 14 He will glorify me, because He will take of what is mine and will make it known to you. NIV 14 He will bring glory to me by taking from what is mine and making it known to you. WNT 15 Everything that the Father has is mine; that is why I said that the Spirit of Truth takes of what is mine and will make it known to you. NIV 15 All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will take from what is mine and make it known to you. WNT 16 "A little while and you see me no more, and again a little while and you shall see me." NIV 16 "In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me." WNT 17 Some of His disciples therefore said to one another, "What does this mean which He is telling us, `A little while and you do not see me, and again a little while and you shall see me,' and `Because I am going to the Father'?" NIV 17 Some of his disciples said to one another, "What does he mean by saying, 'In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me,' and 'Because I am going to the Father'?" WNT 18 So they asked one another repeatedly, "What can that `little while' mean which He speaks of? We do not understand His words." NIV 18 They kept asking, "What does he mean by 'a little while'? We don't understand what he is saying." WNT 19 Jesus perceived that they wanted to ask Him, and He said, "Is this what you are questioning one another about--my saying, `A little while and you do not see me, and again a little while and you shall see me'? NIV 19 Jesus saw that they wanted to ask him about this, so he said to them, "Are you asking one another what I meant when I said, 'In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me'? WNT 20 In most solemn truth I tell you that you will weep aloud and lament, but the world will be glad. You will mourn, but your grief will be turned into gladness. NIV 20 I tell you the truth, you will weep and mourn while the world rejoices. You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy. WNT 21 A woman, when she is in labour, has sorrow, because her time has come. But when she has given birth to the babe, she no longer remembers the pain, because of her joy at a child being born into the world. NIV 21 A woman giving birth to a child has pain because her time has come; but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world. WNT 22 So you also now have sorrow; but I shall see you again, and your hearts will be glad, and your gladness no one will take away from you. NIV 22 So with you: Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy. WNT 23 You will put no questions to me then. "In most solemn truth I tell you that whatever you ask the Father for in my name He will give you. NIV 23 In that day you will no longer ask me anything. I tell you the truth, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name. WNT 24 As yet you have not asked for anything in my name: ask, and you shall receive, that your hearts may be filled with gladness. NIV 24 Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete. WNT 25 "All this I have spoken to you in veiled language. The time is coming when I shall no longer speak to you in veiled language, but will tell you about the Father in plain words. NIV 25 "Though I have been speaking figuratively, a time is coming when I will no longer use this kind of language but will tell you plainly about my Father. WNT 26 At that time you will make your requests in my name; and I do not promise to ask the Father on your behalf, NIV 26 In that day you will ask in my name. I am not saying that I will ask the Father on your behalf. WNT 27 for the Father Himself holds you dear, because you have held me dear and have believed that I came from the Father's presence. NIV 27 No, the Father himself loves you because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God. WNT 28 I came from the Father and have come into the world. Again I am leaving the world and am going to the Father." NIV 28 I came from the Father and entered the world; now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father." WNT 29 "Ah, now you are using plain language," said His disciples, "and are uttering no figure of speech! NIV 29 Then Jesus' disciples said, "Now you are speaking clearly and without figures of speech. WNT 30 Now we know that you have all knowledge, and do not need to be pressed with questions. Through this we believe that you came from God." NIV 30 Now we can see that you know all things and that you do not even need to have anyone ask you questions. This makes us believe that you came from God." WNT 31 "Do you at last believe?" replied Jesus. NIV 31 "You believe at last!" Jesus answered. WNT 32 "Remember that the time is coming, nay, has already come, for you all to be dispersed each to his own home and to leave me alone. And yet I am not alone, for the Father is with me. NIV 32 "But a time is coming, and has come, when you will be scattered, each to his own home. You will leave me all alone. Yet I am not alone, for my Father is with me. WNT 33 "I have spoken all this to you in order that in me you may have peace. In the world you have affliction. But keep up your courage: *I* have won the victory over the world." NIV 33 "I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world."
