John 5

HNV 1 After these things, there was a feast of the Yehudim, and Yeshua went up to Yerushalayim. NIV 1 Some time later, Jesus went up to Jerusalem for a feast of the Jews. HNV 2 Now in Yerushalayim by the sheep gate, there is a pool, which is called in Hebrew, "Beit-Zata," having five porches. NIV 2 Now there is in Jerusalem near the Sheep Gate a pool, which in Aramaic is called Bethesda and which is surrounded by five covered colonnades. HNV 3 In these lay a great multitude of those who were sick, blind, lame, or paralyzed, waiting for the moving of the water; NIV 3 Here a great number of disabled people used to lie--the blind, the lame, the paralyzed. HNV 4 for an angel of the Lord went down at certain times into the pool, and stirred up the water. Whoever stepped in first after the stirring of the water was made whole of whatever disease he was afflicted with. HNV 5 A certain man was there, who had been sick for thirty-eight years. NIV 5 One who was there had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. HNV 6 When Yeshua saw him lying there, and knew that he had been sick for a long time, he asked him, "Do you want to be made well?" NIV 6 When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, "Do you want to get well?" HNV 7 The sick man answered him, "Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, but while I'm coming, another steps down before me." NIV 7 "Sir," the invalid replied, "I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of me." HNV 8 Yeshua said to him, "Arise, take up your mat, and walk." NIV 8 Then Jesus said to him, "Get up! Pick up your mat and walk." HNV 9 Immediately, the man was made well, and took up his mat and walked. Now it was the Shabbat on that day. NIV 9 At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked. The day on which this took place was a Sabbath, HNV 10 So the Yehudim said to him who was cured, "It is the Shabbat. It is not lawful for you to carry the mat." NIV 10 and so the Jews said to the man who had been healed, "It is the Sabbath; the law forbids you to carry your mat." HNV 11 He answered them, "He who made me well, the same said to me, 'Take up your mat, and walk.'" NIV 11 But he replied, "The man who made me well said to me, 'Pick up your mat and walk.' " HNV 12 Then they asked him, "Who is the man who said to you, 'Take up your mat, and walk'?" NIV 12 So they asked him, "Who is this fellow who told you to pick it up and walk?" HNV 13 But he who was healed didn't know who it was, for Yeshua had withdrawn, a crowd being in the place. NIV 13 The man who was healed had no idea who it was, for Jesus had slipped away into the crowd that was there. HNV 14 Afterward Yeshua found him in the temple, and said to him, "Behold, you are made well. Sin no more, so that nothing worse happens to you." NIV 14 Later Jesus found him at the temple and said to him, "See, you are well again. Stop sinning or something worse may happen to you." HNV 15 The man went away, and told the Yehudim that it was Yeshua who had made him well. NIV 15 The man went away and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well. HNV 16 For this cause the Yehudim persecuted Yeshua, and sought to kill him, because he did these things on the Shabbat. NIV 16 So, because Jesus was doing these things on the Sabbath, the Jews persecuted him. HNV 17 But Yeshua answered them, "My Father is still working, so I am working, too." NIV 17 Jesus said to them, "My Father is always at his work to this very day, and I, too, am working." HNV 18 For this cause therefore the Yehudim sought the more to kill him, because he not only broke the Shabbat, but also called God his own Father, making himself equal with God. NIV 18 For this reason the Jews tried all the harder to kill him; not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God. HNV 19 Yeshua therefore answered them, "Most assuredly, I tell you, the Son can do nothing of himself, but what he sees the Father doing. For whatever things he does, these the Son also does likewise. NIV 19 Jesus gave them this answer: "I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does. HNV 20 For the Father has affection for the Son, and shows him all things that he himself does. He will show him greater works than these, that you may marvel. NIV 20 For the Father loves the Son and shows him all he does. Yes, to your amazement he will show him even greater things than these. HNV 21 For as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son also gives life to whom he desires. NIV 21 For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son gives life to whom he is pleased to give it. HNV 22 For neither does the Father judge any man, but he has given all judgment to the Son, NIV 22 Moreover, the Father judges no one, but has entrusted all judgment to the Son, HNV 23 that all may honor the Son, even as they honor the Father. He who doesn't honor the Son doesn't honor the Father who sent him. NIV 23 that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father, who sent him. HNV 24 "Most assuredly I tell you, he who hears my word, and believes him who sent me, has eternal life, and doesn't come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life. NIV 24 "I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life. HNV 25 Most assuredly, I tell you, the hour comes, and now is, when the dead will hear the Son of God's voice; and those who hear will live. NIV 25 I tell you the truth, a time is coming and has now come when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God and those who hear will live. HNV 26 For as the Father has life in himself, even so he gave to the Son also to have life in himself. NIV 26 For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son to have life in himself. HNV 27 He also gave him authority to execute judgment, because he is a son of man. NIV 27 And he has given him authority to judge because he is the Son of Man. HNV 28 Don't marvel at this, for the hour comes, in which all that are in the tombs will hear his voice, NIV 28 "Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming when all who are in their graves will hear his voice HNV 29 and will come forth; those who have done good, to the resurrection of life; and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of judgment. NIV 29 and come out--those who have done good will rise to live, and those who have done evil will rise to be condemned. HNV 30 I can of myself do nothing. As I hear, I judge, and my judgment is righteous; because I don't seek my own will, but the will of my Father who sent me. NIV 30 By myself I can do nothing; I judge only as I hear, and my judgment is just, for I seek not to please myself but him who sent me. HNV 31 "If I testify about myself, my witness is not valid. NIV 31 "If I testify about myself, my testimony is not valid. HNV 32 It is another who testifies about me. I know that the testimony which he testifies about me is true. NIV 32 There is another who testifies in my favor, and I know that his testimony about me is valid. HNV 33 You have sent to Yochanan, and he has testified to the truth. NIV 33 "You have sent to John and he has testified to the truth. HNV 34 But the testimony which I receive is not from man. However, I say these things that you may be saved. NIV 34 Not that I accept human testimony; but I mention it that you may be saved. HNV 35 He was the lamp that burns and shines, and you were willing to rejoice for a while in his light. NIV 35 John was a lamp that burned and gave light, and you chose for a time to enjoy his light. HNV 36 But the testimony which I have is greater than that of Yochanan, for the works which the Father gave me to accomplish, the very works that I do, testify about me, that the Father has sent me. NIV 36 "I have testimony weightier than that of John. For the very work that the Father has given me to finish, and which I am doing, testifies that the Father has sent me. HNV 37 The Father himself, who sent me, has testified about me. You have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his form. NIV 37 And the Father who sent me has himself testified concerning me. You have never heard his voice nor seen his form, HNV 38 You don't have his word living in you; for whom he sent, him you don't believe. NIV 38 nor does his word dwell in you, for you do not believe the one he sent. HNV 39 "You search the Scriptures, because you think that in them you have eternal life; and these are they which testify about me. NIV 39 You diligently study the Scriptures because you think that by them you possess eternal life. These are the Scriptures that testify about me, HNV 40 Yet you will not come to me, that you may have life. NIV 40 yet you refuse to come to me to have life. HNV 41 I don't receive glory from men. NIV 41 "I do not accept praise from men, HNV 42 But I know you, that you don't have God's love in yourselves. NIV 42 but I know you. I know that you do not have the love of God in your hearts. HNV 43 I have come in my Father's name, and you don't receive me. If another comes in his own name, you will receive him. NIV 43 I have come in my Father's name, and you do not accept me; but if someone else comes in his own name, you will accept him. HNV 44 How can you believe, who receive glory from one another, and you don't seek the glory that comes from the only God? NIV 44 How can you believe if you accept praise from one another, yet make no effort to obtain the praise that comes from the only God ? HNV 45 "Don't think that I will accuse you to the Father. There is one who accuses you, even Moshe, on whom you have set your hope. NIV 45 "But do not think I will accuse you before the Father. Your accuser is Moses, on whom your hopes are set. HNV 46 For if you believed Moshe, you would believe me; for he wrote about me. NIV 46 If you believed Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote about me. HNV 47 But if you don't believe his writings, how will you believe my words?" NIV 47 But since you do not believe what he wrote, how are you going to believe what I say?"
