NAS 1 But Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. NIV 1 But Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. NAS 2 Early in the morning He came again into the temple, and all the people were coming to Him; and He sat down and began to teach them. NIV 2 At dawn he appeared again in the temple courts, where all the people gathered around him, and he sat down to teach them. NAS 3 The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman caught in adultery, and having set her in the center of the court, NIV 3 The teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought in a woman caught in adultery. They made her stand before the group NAS 4 they said to Him, "Teacher, this woman has been caught in adultery, in the very act. NIV 4 and said to Jesus, "Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery. NAS 5 "Now in the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women; what then do You say?" NIV 5 In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say?" NAS 6 They were saying this, testing Him, so that they might have grounds for accusing Him. But Jesus stooped down and with His finger wrote on the ground. NIV 6 They were using this question as a trap, in order to have a basis for accusing him. But Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with his finger. NAS 7 But when they persisted in asking Him, He straightened up, and said to them, "He who is without sin among you, let him be the first to throw a stone at her." NIV 7 When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, "If any one of you is without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone at her." NAS 8 Again He stooped down and wrote on the ground. NIV 8 Again he stooped down and wrote on the ground. NAS 9 When they heard it, they began to go out one by one, beginning with the older ones, and He was left alone, and the woman, where she was, in the center of the court. NIV 9 At this, those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus was left, with the woman still standing there. NAS 10 Straightening up, Jesus said to her, "Woman, where are they? Did no one condemn you?" NIV 10 Jesus straightened up and asked her, "Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?" NAS 11 She said, "No one, Lord ." And Jesus said, "I do not condemn you, either. Go. From now on sin no more."] NIV 11 "No one, sir," she said. "Then neither do I condemn you," Jesus declared. "Go now and leave your life of sin." NAS 12 Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, "I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life." NIV 12 When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." NAS 13 So the Pharisees said to Him, "You are testifying about Yourself; Your testimony is not true." NIV 13 The Pharisees challenged him, "Here you are, appearing as your own witness; your testimony is not valid." NAS 14 Jesus answered and said to them, "Even if I testify about Myself, My testimony is true, for I know where I came from and where I am going; but you do not know where I come from or where I am going. NIV 14 Jesus answered, "Even if I testify on my own behalf, my testimony is valid, for I know where I came from and where I am going. But you have no idea where I come from or where I am going. NAS 15 "You judge according to the flesh; I am not judging anyone. NIV 15 You judge by human standards; I pass judgment on no one. NAS 16 "But even if I do judge, My judgment is true; for I am not alone in it, but I and the Father who sent Me. NIV 16 But if I do judge, my decisions are right, because I am not alone. I stand with the Father, who sent me. NAS 17 "Even in your law it has been written that the testimony of two men is true. NIV 17 In your own Law it is written that the testimony of two men is valid. NAS 18 "I am He who testifies about Myself, and the Father who sent Me testifies about Me." NIV 18 I am one who testifies for myself; my other witness is the Father, who sent me." NAS 19 So they were saying to Him, "Where is Your Father?" Jesus answered, "You know neither Me nor My Father; if you knew Me, you would know My Father also." NIV 19 Then they asked him, "Where is your father?" "You do not know me or my Father," Jesus replied. "If you knew me, you would know my Father also." NAS 20 These words He spoke in the treasury, as He taught in the temple; and no one seized Him, because His hour had not yet come. NIV 20 He spoke these words while teaching in the temple area near the place where the offerings were put. Yet no one seized him, because his time had not yet come. NAS 21 Then He said again to them, "I go away, and you will seek Me, and will die in your sin; where I am going, you cannot come." NIV 21 Once more Jesus said to them, "I am going away, and you will look for me, and you will die in your sin. Where I go, you cannot come." NAS 22 So the Jews were saying, "Surely He will not kill Himself, will He, since He says, 'Where I am going, you cannot come '?" NIV 22 This made the Jews ask, "Will he kill himself ? Is that why he says, 'Where I go, you cannot come'?" NAS 23 And He was saying to them, "You are from below, I am from above; you are of this world, I am not of this world. NIV 23 But he continued, "You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world. NAS 24 "Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins; for unless you believe that I am He, you will die in your sins." NIV 24 I told you that you would die in your sins; if you do not believe that I am [the one I claim to be], you will indeed die in your sins." NAS 25 So they were saying to Him, "Who are You?" Jesus said to them, "What have I been saying to you from the beginning? NIV 25 "Who are you?" they asked. "Just what I have been claiming all along," Jesus replied. NAS 26 "I have many things to speak and to judge concerning you, but He who sent Me is true; and the things which I heard from Him, these I speak to the world." NIV 26 "I have much to say in judgment of you. But he who sent me is reliable, and what I have heard from him I tell the world." NAS 27 They did not realize that He had been speaking to them about the Father. NIV 27 They did not understand that he was telling them about his Father. NAS 28 So Jesus said, "When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am He, and I do nothing on My own initiative, but I speak these things as the Father taught Me. NIV 28 So Jesus said, "When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am [the one I claim to be] and that I do nothing on my own but speak just what the Father has taught me. NAS 29 "And He who sent Me is with Me; He has not left Me alone, for I always do the things that are pleasing to Him." NIV 29 The one who sent me is with me; he has not left me alone, for I always do what pleases him." NAS 30 As He spoke these things, many came to believe in Him. NIV 30 Even as he spoke, many put their faith in him. NAS 31 So Jesus was saying to those Jews who had believed Him, "If you continue in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine; NIV 31 To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, "If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. NAS 32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free." NIV 32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." NAS 33 They answered Him, "We are Abraham's descendants and have never yet been enslaved to anyone; how is it that You say, 'You will become free '?" NIV 33 They answered him, "We are Abraham's descendants and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?" NAS 34 Jesus answered them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is the slave of sin. NIV 34 Jesus replied, "I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. NAS 35 "The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son does remain forever. NIV 35 Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. NAS 36 "So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed. NIV 36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. NAS 37 "I know that you are Abraham's descendants; yet you seek to kill Me, because My word has no place in you. NIV 37 I know you are Abraham's descendants. Yet you are ready to kill me, because you have no room for my word. NAS 38 "I speak the things which I have seen with My Father; therefore you also do the things which you heard from your father." NIV 38 I am telling you what I have seen in the Father's presence, and you do what you have heard from your father. " NAS 39 They answered and said to Him, "Abraham is our father." Jesus said to them, "If you are Abraham's children, do the deeds of Abraham. NIV 39 "Abraham is our father," they answered. "If you were Abraham's children," said Jesus, "then you would do the things Abraham did. NAS 40 "But as it is, you are seeking to kill Me, a man who has told you the truth, which I heard from God; this Abraham did not do. NIV 40 As it is, you are determined to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. Abraham did not do such things. NAS 41 "You are doing the deeds of your father." They said to Him, "We were not born of fornication; we have one Father: God." NIV 41 You are doing the things your own father does." "We are not illegitimate children," they protested. "The only Father we have is God himself." NAS 42 Jesus said to them, "If God were your Father, you would love Me, for I proceeded forth and have come from God, for I have not even come on My own initiative, but He sent Me. NIV 42 Jesus said to them, "If God were your Father, you would love me, for I came from God and now am here. I have not come on my own; but he sent me. NAS 43 "Why do you not understand what I am saying? It is because you cannot hear My word. NIV 43 Why is my language not clear to you? Because you are unable to hear what I say. NAS 44 "You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth because there is no truth in him. Whenever he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies. NIV 44 You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father's desire. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies. NAS 45 "But because I speak the truth, you do not believe Me. NIV 45 Yet because I tell the truth, you do not believe me! NAS 46 "Which one of you convicts Me of sin? If I speak truth, why do you not believe Me? NIV 46 Can any of you prove me guilty of sin? If I am telling the truth, why don't you believe me? NAS 47 "He who is of God hears the words of God; for this reason you do not hear them, because you are not of God." NIV 47 He who belongs to God hears what God says. The reason you do not hear is that you do not belong to God." NAS 48 The Jews answered and said to Him, "Do we not say rightly that You are a Samaritan and have a demon?" NIV 48 The Jews answered him, "Aren't we right in saying that you are a Samaritan and demon-possessed?" NAS 49 Jesus answered, "I do not have a demon; but I honor My Father, and you dishonor Me. NIV 49 "I am not possessed by a demon," said Jesus, "but I honor my Father and you dishonor me. NAS 50 "But I do not seek My glory; there is One who seeks and judges. NIV 50 I am not seeking glory for myself; but there is one who seeks it, and he is the judge. NAS 51 "Truly, truly, I say to you, if anyone keeps My word he will never see death." NIV 51 I tell you the truth, if anyone keeps my word, he will never see death." NAS 52 The Jews said to Him, "Now we know that You have a demon. Abraham died, and the prophets also; and You say, 'If anyone keeps My word, he will never taste of death.' NIV 52 At this the Jews exclaimed, "Now we know that you are demon-possessed! Abraham died and so did the prophets, yet you say that if anyone keeps your word, he will never taste death. NAS 53 "Surely You are not greater than our father Abraham, who died? The prophets died too; whom do You make Yourself out to be?" NIV 53 Are you greater than our father Abraham? He died, and so did the prophets. Who do you think you are?" NAS 54 Jesus answered, "If I glorify Myself, My glory is nothing; it is My Father who glorifies Me, of whom you say, 'He is our God '; NIV 54 Jesus replied, "If I glorify myself, my glory means nothing. My Father, whom you claim as your God, is the one who glorifies me. NAS 55 and you have not come to know Him, but I know Him; and if I say that I do not know Him, I will be a liar like you, but I do know Him and keep His word. NIV 55 Though you do not know him, I know him. If I said I did not, I would be a liar like you, but I do know him and keep his word. NAS 56 "Your father Abraham rejoiced to see My day, and he saw it and was glad." NIV 56 Your father Abraham rejoiced at the thought of seeing my day; he saw it and was glad." NAS 57 So the Jews said to Him, "You are not yet fifty years old, and have You seen Abraham?" NIV 57 "You are not yet fifty years old," the Jews said to him, "and you have seen Abraham!" NAS 58 Jesus said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was born, I am." NIV 58 "I tell you the truth," Jesus answered, "before Abraham was born, I am!" NAS 59 Therefore they picked up stones to throw at Him, but Jesus hid Himself and went out of the temple. NIV 59 At this, they picked up stones to stone him, but Jesus hid himself, slipping away from the temple grounds.
