Jonah 2:2-9

RSV 2 saying, "I called to the LORD, out of my distress, and he answered me; out of the belly of Sheol I cried, and thou didst hear my voice. NIV 2 He said: "In my distress I called to the LORD, and he answered me. From the depths of the grave I called for help, and you listened to my cry. RSV 3 For thou didst cast me into the deep, into the heart of the seas, and the flood was round about me; all thy waves and thy billows passed over me. NIV 3 You hurled me into the deep, into the very heart of the seas, and the currents swirled about me; all your waves and breakers swept over me. RSV 4 Then I said, 'I am cast out from thy presence; how shall I again look upon thy holy temple?' NIV 4 I said, 'I have been banished from your sight; yet I will look again toward your holy temple.' RSV 5 The waters closed in over me, the deep was round about me; weeds were wrapped about my head NIV 5 The engulfing waters threatened me, the deep surrounded me; seaweed was wrapped around my head. RSV 6 at the roots of the mountains. I went down to the land whose bars closed upon me for ever; yet thou didst bring up my life from the Pit, O LORD my God. NIV 6 To the roots of the mountains I sank down; the earth beneath barred me in forever. But you brought my life up from the pit, O LORD my God. RSV 7 When my soul fainted within me, I remembered the LORD; and my prayer came to thee, into thy holy temple. NIV 7 "When my life was ebbing away, I remembered you, LORD, and my prayer rose to you, to your holy temple. RSV 8 Those who pay regard to vain idols forsake their true loyalty. NIV 8 "Those who cling to worthless idols forfeit the grace that could be theirs. RSV 9 But I with the voice of thanksgiving will sacrifice to thee; what I have vowed I will pay. Deliverance belongs to the LORD!" NIV 9 But I, with a song of thanksgiving, will sacrifice to you. What I have vowed I will make good. Salvation comes from the LORD."
