Luke 16:19-31

NLT 19 Jesus said, "There was a certain rich man who was splendidly clothed and who lived each day in luxury. NIV 19 "There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and lived in luxury every day. NLT 20 At his door lay a diseased beggar named Lazarus. NIV 20 At his gate was laid a beggar named Lazarus, covered with sores NLT 21 As Lazarus lay there longing for scraps from the rich man's table, the dogs would come and lick his open sores. NIV 21 and longing to eat what fell from the rich man's table. Even the dogs came and licked his sores. NLT 22 Finally, the beggar died and was carried by the angels to be with Abraham. The rich man also died and was buried, NIV 22 "The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham's side. The rich man also died and was buried. NLT 23 and his soul went to the place of the dead. There, in torment, he saw Lazarus in the far distance with Abraham." NIV 23 In hell, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side. NLT 24 "The rich man shouted, 'Father Abraham, have some pity! Send Lazarus over here to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in anguish in these flames.'" NIV 24 So he called to him, 'Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.' NLT 25 "But Abraham said to him, 'Son, remember that during your lifetime you had everything you wanted, and Lazarus had nothing. So now he is here being comforted, and you are in anguish. NIV 25 "But Abraham replied, 'Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things, but now he is comforted here and you are in agony. NLT 26 And besides, there is a great chasm separating us. Anyone who wanted to cross over to you from here is stopped at its edge, and no one there can cross over to us.'" NIV 26 And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, so that those who want to go from here to you cannot, nor can anyone cross over from there to us.' NLT 27 "Then the rich man said, 'Please, Father Abraham, send him to my father's home. NIV 27 "He answered, 'Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my father's house, NLT 28 For I have five brothers, and I want him to warn them about this place of torment so they won't have to come here when they die.'" NIV 28 for I have five brothers. Let him warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.' NLT 29 "But Abraham said, 'Moses and the prophets have warned them. Your brothers can read their writings anytime they want to.'" NIV 29 "Abraham replied, 'They have Moses and the Prophets; let them listen to them.' NLT 30 "The rich man replied, 'No, Father Abraham! But if someone is sent to them from the dead, then they will turn from their sins.'" NIV 30 " 'No, father Abraham,' he said, 'but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.' NLT 31 "But Abraham said, 'If they won't listen to Moses and the prophets, they won't listen even if someone rises from the dead.'" NIV 31 "He said to him, 'If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.' "
