WEB 1 Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene, NIV 1 In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar--when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, Herod tetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip tetrarch of Iturea and Traconitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene-- WEB 2 in the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John, the son of Zacharias, in the wilderness. NIV 2 during the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John son of Zechariah in the desert. WEB 3 He came into all the region around the Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance to remission of sins. NIV 3 He went into all the country around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. WEB 4 As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet, "The voice of one crying in the wilderness, 'Make ready the way of the Lord. Make his paths straight. WEB 5 Every valley will be filled. Every mountain and hill will be brought low. The crooked will become straight, And the rough ways smooth. NIV 5 Every valley shall be filled in, every mountain and hill made low. The crooked roads shall become straight, the rough ways smooth. WEB 6 All flesh will see God's salvation.'" NIV 6 And all mankind will see God's salvation.' " WEB 7 He said therefore to the multitudes who went out to be baptized by him, "You offspring of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? NIV 7 John said to the crowds coming out to be baptized by him, "You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? WEB 8 Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance, and don't begin to say among yourselves, 'We have Abraham for our father;' for I tell you that God is able to raise up children to Abraham from these stones! NIV 8 Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. And do not begin to say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our father.' For I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham. WEB 9 Even now the ax also lies at the root of the trees. Every tree therefore that doesn't bring forth good fruit is cut down, and thrown into the fire." NIV 9 The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire." WEB 10 The multitudes asked him, "What then must we do?" NIV 10 "What should we do then?" the crowd asked. WEB 11 He answered them, "He who has two coats, let him give to him who has none. He who has food, let him do likewise." NIV 11 John answered, "The man with two tunics should share with him who has none, and the one who has food should do the same." WEB 12 Tax collectors also came to be baptized, and they said to him, "Teacher, what must we do?" NIV 12 Tax collectors also came to be baptized. "Teacher," they asked, "what should we do?" WEB 13 He said to them, "Collect no more than that which is appointed you." NIV 13 "Don't collect any more than you are required to," he told them. WEB 14 Soldiers also asked him, saying, "What about us? What must we do?" He said to them, "Extort from no one by violence, neither accuse anyone wrongfully. Be content with your wages." NIV 14 Then some soldiers asked him, "And what should we do?" He replied, "Don't extort money and don't accuse people falsely--be content with your pay." WEB 15 As the people were in expectation, and all men reasoned in their hearts concerning John, whether perhaps he was the Christ, NIV 15 The people were waiting expectantly and were all wondering in their hearts if John might possibly be the Christ. WEB 16 John answered them all, "I indeed baptize you with water, but he comes who is mightier than I, the latchet of whose sandals I am not worthy to loosen. He will baptize you in the Holy Spirit and fire, NIV 16 John answered them all, "I baptize you with water. But one more powerful than I will come, the thongs of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. WEB 17 whose fan is in his hand, and he will thoroughly cleanse his threshing floor, and will gather the wheat into his barn; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire." WEB 18 Then with many other exhortations he preached good news to the people, NIV 18 And with many other words John exhorted the people and preached the good news to them. WEB 19 but Herod the tetrarch, being reproved by him for Herodias, his brother's wife, and for all the evil things which Herod had done, NIV 19 But when John rebuked Herod the tetrarch because of Herodias, his brother's wife, and all the other evil things he had done, WEB 20 added this also to them all, that he shut up John in prison. NIV 20 Herod added this to them all: He locked John up in prison. WEB 21 Now it happened, when all the people were baptized, that, Jesus also having been baptized, and praying, the sky was opened, NIV 21 When all the people were being baptized, Jesus was baptized too. And as he was praying, heaven was opened WEB 22 and the Holy Spirit descended in a bodily form, as a dove on him; and a voice came out of the sky, saying "You are my beloved Son.
