CEB 2 Some Pharisees came and, trying to test him, they asked, "Does the Law allow a man to divorce his wife?" NRS 2 Some Pharisees came, and to test him they asked, "Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?" CEB 3 Jesus answered, "What did Moses command you?" NRS 3 He answered them, "What did Moses command you?" CEB 4 They said, "Moses allowed a man to write a divorce certificate and to divorce his wife." NRS 4 They said, "Moses allowed a man to write a certificate of dismissal and to divorce her." CEB 5 Jesus said to them, "He wrote this commandment for you because of your unyielding hearts. NRS 5 But Jesus said to them, "Because of your hardness of heart he wrote this commandment for you. CEB 6 At the beginning of creation, God made them male and female. NRS 6 But from the beginning of creation, "God made them male and female.' CEB 7 Because of this, a man should leave his father and mother and be joined together with his wife, NRS 7 "For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, CEB 8 and the two will be one flesh. So they are no longer two but one flesh. NRS 8 and the two shall become one flesh.' So they are no longer two, but one flesh. CEB 9 Therefore, humans must not pull apart what God has put together." NRS 9 Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate." CEB 10 Inside the house, the disciples asked him again about this. NRS 10 Then in the house the disciples asked him again about this matter. CEB 11 He said to them, "Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her; NRS 11 He said to them, "Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her; CEB 12 and if a wife divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery." NRS 12 and if she divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery." CEB 13 People were bringing children to Jesus so that he would bless them. But the disciples scolded them. NRS 13 People were bringing little children to him in order that he might touch them; and the disciples spoke sternly to them. CEB 14 When Jesus saw this, he grew angry and said to them, "Allow the children to come to me. Don't forbid them, because God's kingdom belongs to people like these children. NRS 14 But when Jesus saw this, he was indignant and said to them, "Let the little children come to me; do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of God belongs. CEB 15 I assure you that whoever doesn't welcome God's kingdom like a child will never enter it." NRS 15 Truly I tell you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will never enter it." CEB 16 Then he hugged the children and blessed them. NRS 16 And he took them up in his arms, laid his hands on them, and blessed them.
