Mark 8:27-38

CEB 27 Jesus and his disciples went into the villages near Caesarea Philippi. On the way he asked his disciples, "Who do people say that I am?" NRS 27 Jesus went on with his disciples to the villages of Caesarea Philippi; and on the way he asked his disciples, "Who do people say that I am?" CEB 28 They told him, "Some say John the Baptist, others Elijah, and still others one of the prophets." NRS 28 And they answered him, "John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; and still others, one of the prophets." CEB 29 He asked them, "And what about you? Who do you say that I am?" Peter answered, "You are the Christ." NRS 29 He asked them, "But who do you say that I am?" Peter answered him, "You are the Messiah." CEB 30 Jesus ordered them not to tell anyone about him. NRS 30 And he sternly ordered them not to tell anyone about him. CEB 31 Then Jesus began to teach his disciples: "The Human One must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, chief priests, and the legal experts, and be killed, and then, after three days, rise from the dead." NRS 31 Then he began to teach them that the Son of Man must undergo great suffering, and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. CEB 32 He said this plainly. But Peter took hold of Jesus and, scolding him, began to correct him. NRS 32 He said all this quite openly. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. CEB 33 Jesus turned and looked at his disciples, then sternly corrected Peter: "Get behind me, Satan. You are not thinking God's thoughts but human thoughts." NRS 33 But turning and looking at his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, "Get behind me, Satan! For you are setting your mind not on divine things but on human things." CEB 34 After calling the crowd together with his disciples, Jesus said to them, "All who want to come after me must say no to themselves, take up their cross, and follow me. NRS 34 He called the crowd with his disciples, and said to them, "If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. CEB 35 All who want to save their lives will lose them. But all who lose their lives because of me and because of the good news will save them. NRS 35 For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake, and for the sake of the gospel, will save it. CEB 36 Why would people gain the whole world but lose their lives? NRS 36 For what will it profit them to gain the whole world and forfeit their life? CEB 37 What will people give in exchange for their lives? NRS 37 Indeed, what can they give in return for their life? CEB 38 Whoever is ashamed of me and my words in this unfaithful and sinful generation, the Human One will be ashamed of that person when he comes in the Father's glory with the holy angels." NRS 38 Those who are ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of them the Son of Man will also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels."
