Matthew 12

NRS 1 At that time Jesus went through the grainfields on the sabbath; his disciples were hungry, and they began to pluck heads of grain and to eat. NIV 1 At that time Jesus went through the grainfields on the Sabbath. His disciples were hungry and began to pick some heads of grain and eat them. NRS 2 When the Pharisees saw it, they said to him, "Look, your disciples are doing what is not lawful to do on the sabbath." NIV 2 When the Pharisees saw this, they said to him, "Look! Your disciples are doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath." NRS 3 He said to them, "Have you not read what David did when he and his companions were hungry? NIV 3 He answered, "Haven't you read what David did when he and his companions were hungry? NRS 4 He entered the house of God and ate the bread of the Presence, which it was not lawful for him or his companions to eat, but only for the priests. NIV 4 He entered the house of God, and he and his companions ate the consecrated bread--which was not lawful for them to do, but only for the priests. NRS 5 Or have you not read in the law that on the sabbath the priests in the temple break the sabbath and yet are guiltless? NIV 5 Or haven't you read in the Law that on the Sabbath the priests in the temple desecrate the day and yet are innocent? NRS 6 I tell you, something greater than the temple is here. NIV 6 I tell you that one greater than the temple is here. NRS 7 But if you had known what this means, "I desire mercy and not sacrifice,' you would not have condemned the guiltless. NIV 7 If you had known what these words mean, 'I desire mercy, not sacrifice,' you would not have condemned the innocent. NRS 8 For the Son of Man is lord of the sabbath." NIV 8 For the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath." NRS 9 He left that place and entered their synagogue; NIV 9 Going on from that place, he went into their synagogue, NRS 10 a man was there with a withered hand, and they asked him, "Is it lawful to cure on the sabbath?" so that they might accuse him. NIV 10 and a man with a shriveled hand was there. Looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, they asked him, "Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?" NRS 11 He said to them, "Suppose one of you has only one sheep and it falls into a pit on the sabbath; will you not lay hold of it and lift it out? NIV 11 He said to them, "If any of you has a sheep and it falls into a pit on the Sabbath, will you not take hold of it and lift it out? NRS 12 How much more valuable is a human being than a sheep! So it is lawful to do good on the sabbath." NIV 12 How much more valuable is a man than a sheep! Therefore it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath." NRS 13 Then he said to the man, "Stretch out your hand." He stretched it out, and it was restored, as sound as the other. NIV 13 Then he said to the man, "Stretch out your hand." So he stretched it out and it was completely restored, just as sound as the other. NRS 14 But the Pharisees went out and conspired against him, how to destroy him. NIV 14 But the Pharisees went out and plotted how they might kill Jesus. NRS 15 When Jesus became aware of this, he departed. Many crowds followed him, and he cured all of them, NIV 15 Aware of this, Jesus withdrew from that place. Many followed him, and he healed all their sick, NRS 16 and he ordered them not to make him known. NIV 16 warning them not to tell who he was. NRS 17 This was to fulfill what had been spoken through the prophet Isaiah: NIV 17 This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah: NRS 18 "Here is my servant, whom I have chosen, my beloved, with whom my soul is well pleased. I will put my Spirit upon him, and he will proclaim justice to the Gentiles. NIV 18 "Here is my servant whom I have chosen, the one I love, in whom I delight; I will put my Spirit on him, and he will proclaim justice to the nations. NRS 19 He will not wrangle or cry aloud, nor will anyone hear his voice in the streets. NIV 19 He will not quarrel or cry out; no one will hear his voice in the streets. NRS 20 He will not break a bruised reed or quench a smoldering wick until he brings justice to victory. NIV 20 A bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out, till he leads justice to victory. NRS 21 And in his name the Gentiles will hope." NIV 21 In his name the nations will put their hope." NRS 22 Then they brought to him a demoniac who was blind and mute; and he cured him, so that the one who had been mute could speak and see. NIV 22 Then they brought him a demon-possessed man who was blind and mute, and Jesus healed him, so that he could both talk and see. NRS 23 All the crowds were amazed and said, "Can this be the Son of David?" NIV 23 All the people were astonished and said, "Could this be the Son of David?" NRS 24 But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, "It is only by Beelzebul, the ruler of the demons, that this fellow casts out the demons." NIV 24 But when the Pharisees heard this, they said, "It is only by Beelzebub, the prince of demons, that this fellow drives out demons." NRS 25 He knew what they were thinking and said to them, "Every kingdom divided against itself is laid waste, and no city or house divided against itself will stand. NIV 25 Jesus knew their thoughts and said to them, "Every kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and every city or household divided against itself will not stand. NRS 26 If Satan casts out Satan, he is divided against himself; how then will his kingdom stand? NIV 26 If Satan drives out Satan, he is divided against himself. How then can his kingdom stand? NRS 27 If I cast out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your own exorcists cast them out? Therefore they will be your judges. NIV 27 And if I drive out demons by Beelzebub, by whom do your people drive them out? So then, they will be your judges. NRS 28 But if it is by the Spirit of God that I cast out demons, then the kingdom of God has come to you. NIV 28 But if I drive out demons by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon you. NRS 29 Or how can one enter a strong man's house and plunder his property, without first tying up the strong man? Then indeed the house can be plundered. NIV 29 "Or again, how can anyone enter a strong man's house and carry off his possessions unless he first ties up the strong man? Then he can rob his house. NRS 30 Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters. NIV 30 "He who is not with me is against me, and he who does not gather with me scatters. NRS 31 Therefore I tell you, people will be forgiven for every sin and blasphemy, but blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven. NIV 31 And so I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven. NRS 32 Whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come. NIV 32 Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come. NRS 33 "Either make the tree good, and its fruit good; or make the tree bad, and its fruit bad; for the tree is known by its fruit. NIV 33 "Make a tree good and its fruit will be good, or make a tree bad and its fruit will be bad, for a tree is recognized by its fruit. NRS 34 You brood of vipers! How can you speak good things, when you are evil? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. NIV 34 You brood of vipers, how can you who are evil say anything good? For out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks. NRS 35 The good person brings good things out of a good treasure, and the evil person brings evil things out of an evil treasure. NIV 35 The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in him, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in him. NRS 36 I tell you, on the day of judgment you will have to give an account for every careless word you utter; NIV 36 But I tell you that men will have to give account on the day of judgment for every careless word they have spoken. NRS 37 for by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned." NIV 37 For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned." NRS 38 Then some of the scribes and Pharisees said to him, "Teacher, we wish to see a sign from you." NIV 38 Then some of the Pharisees and teachers of the law said to him, "Teacher, we want to see a miraculous sign from you." NRS 39 But he answered them, "An evil and adulterous generation asks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. NIV 39 He answered, "A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a miraculous sign! But none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. NRS 40 For just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the sea monster, so for three days and three nights the Son of Man will be in the heart of the earth. NIV 40 For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. NRS 41 The people of Nineveh will rise up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, because they repented at the proclamation of Jonah, and see, something greater than Jonah is here! NIV 41 The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and now one greater than Jonah is here. NRS 42 The queen of the South will rise up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, because she came from the ends of the earth to listen to the wisdom of Solomon, and see, something greater than Solomon is here! NIV 42 The Queen of the South will rise at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for she came from the ends of the earth to listen to Solomon's wisdom, and now one greater than Solomon is here. NRS 43 "When the unclean spirit has gone out of a person, it wanders through waterless regions looking for a resting place, but it finds none. NIV 43 "When an evil spirit comes out of a man, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it. NRS 44 Then it says, "I will return to my house from which I came.' When it comes, it finds it empty, swept, and put in order. NIV 44 Then it says, 'I will return to the house I left.' When it arrives, it finds the house unoccupied, swept clean and put in order. NRS 45 Then it goes and brings along seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they enter and live there; and the last state of that person is worse than the first. So will it be also with this evil generation." NIV 45 Then it goes and takes with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the final condition of that man is worse than the first. That is how it will be with this wicked generation." NRS 46 While he was still speaking to the crowds, his mother and his brothers were standing outside, wanting to speak to him. NIV 46 While Jesus was still talking to the crowd, his mother and brothers stood outside, wanting to speak to him. NRS 47 Someone told him, "Look, your mother and your brothers are standing outside, wanting to speak to you." NIV 47 Someone told him, "Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to speak to you." NRS 48 But to the one who had told him this, Jesus replied, "Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?" NIV 48 He replied to him, "Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?" NRS 49 And pointing to his disciples, he said, "Here are my mother and my brothers! NIV 49 Pointing to his disciples, he said, "Here are my mother and my brothers. NRS 50 For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother." NIV 50 For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother."
