Matthew 16:13-28

RSV 13 Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesare'a Philip'pi, he asked his disciples, "Who do men say that the Son of man is?" NIV 13 When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, "Who do people say the Son of Man is?" RSV 14 And they said, "Some say John the Baptist, others say Eli'jah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets." NIV 14 They replied, "Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets." RSV 15 He said to them, "But who do you say that I am?" NIV 15 "But what about you?" he asked. "Who do you say I am?" RSV 16 Simon Peter replied, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." NIV 16 Simon Peter answered, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." RSV 17 And Jesus answered him, "Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jona! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. NIV 17 Jesus replied, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by man, but by my Father in heaven. RSV 18 And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the powers of death shall not prevail against it. NIV 18 And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it. RSV 19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven." NIV 19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven." RSV 20 Then he strictly charged the disciples to tell no one that he was the Christ. NIV 20 Then he warned his disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Christ. RSV 21 From that time Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised. NIV 21 From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life. RSV 22 And Peter took him and began to rebuke him, saying, "God forbid, Lord! This shall never happen to you." NIV 22 Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. "Never, Lord!" he said. "This shall never happen to you!" RSV 23 But he turned and said to Peter, "Get behind me, Satan! You are a hindrance to me; for you are not on the side of God, but of men." NIV 23 Jesus turned and said to Peter, "Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men." RSV 24 Then Jesus told his disciples, "If any man would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. NIV 24 Then Jesus said to his disciples, "If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. RSV 25 For whoever would save his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. NIV 25 For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will find it. RSV 26 For what will it profit a man, if he gains the whole world and forfeits his life? Or what shall a man give in return for his life? NIV 26 What good will it be for a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul? RSV 27 For the Son of man is to come with his angels in the glory of his Father, and then he will repay every man for what he has done. NIV 27 For the Son of Man is going to come in his Father's glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what he has done. RSV 28 Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom." NIV 28 I tell you the truth, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom."
