Matthew 1:18-25

CEB 18 This is how the birth of Jesus Christ took place. When Mary his mother was engaged to Joseph, before they were married, she became pregnant by the Holy Spirit. NIV 18 This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit. CEB 19 Joseph her husband was a righteous man. Because he didn't want to humiliate her, he decided to call off their engagement quietly. NIV 19 Because Joseph her husband was a righteous man and did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly. CEB 20 As he was thinking about this, an angel from the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph son of David, don't be afraid to take Mary as your wife, because the child she carries was conceived by the Holy Spirit. NIV 20 But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. CEB 21 She will give birth to a son, and you will call him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins." NIV 21 She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins." CEB 22 Now all of this took place so that what the Lord had spoken through the prophet would be fulfilled: NIV 22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: CEB 23 Look! A virgin will become pregnant and give birth to a son, And they will call him, Emmanuel. (Emmanuel means "God with us.") NIV 23 "The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel"--which means, "God with us." CEB 24 When Joseph woke up, he did just as an angel from God commanded and took Mary as his wife. NIV 24 When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. CEB 25 But he didn't have sexual relations with her until she gave birth to a son. Joseph called him Jesus. NIV 25 But he had no union with her until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus.
