Matthew 2

GNT 1 Jesus was born in the town of Bethlehem in Judea, during the time when Herod was king. Soon afterward, some men who studied the stars came from the East to Jerusalem NIV 1 After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem GNT 2 and asked, "Where is the baby born to be the king of the Jews? We saw his star when it came up in the east, and we have come to worship him." NIV 2 and asked, "Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star in the east and have come to worship him." GNT 3 When King Herod heard about this, he was very upset, and so was everyone else in Jerusalem. NIV 3 When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him. GNT 4 He called together all the chief priests and the teachers of the Law and asked them, "Where will the Messiah be born?" NIV 4 When he had called together all the people's chief priests and teachers of the law, he asked them where the Christ was to be born. GNT 5 "In the town of Bethlehem in Judea," they answered. "For this is what the prophet wrote: NIV 5 "In Bethlehem in Judea," they replied, "for this is what the prophet has written: GNT 6 "Bethlehem in the land of Judah, you are by no means the least of the leading cities of Judah; for from you will come a leader who will guide my people Israel.' " NIV 6 " 'But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you will come a ruler who will be the shepherd of my people Israel.' " GNT 7 So Herod called the visitors from the East to a secret meeting and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared. NIV 7 Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared. GNT 8 Then he sent them to Bethlehem with these instructions: "Go and make a careful search for the child; and when you find him, let me know, so that I too may go and worship him." NIV 8 He sent them to Bethlehem and said, "Go and make a careful search for the child. As soon as you find him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship him." GNT 9 And so they left, and on their way they saw the same star they had seen in the East. When they saw it, how happy they were, what joy was theirs! It went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was. NIV 9 After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen in the east went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was. GNT 11 They went into the house, and when they saw the child with his mother Mary, they knelt down and worshiped him. They brought out their gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh, and presented them to him. NIV 11 On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold and of incense and of myrrh. GNT 12 Then they returned to their country by another road, since God had warned them in a dream not to go back to Herod. NIV 12 And having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route. GNT 13 After they had left, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph and said, "Herod will be looking for the child in order to kill him. So get up, take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt, and stay there until I tell you to leave." NIV 13 When they had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. "Get up," he said, "take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him." GNT 14 Joseph got up, took the child and his mother, and left during the night for Egypt, NIV 14 So he got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt, GNT 15 where he stayed until Herod died. This was done to make come true what the Lord had said through the prophet, "I called my Son out of Egypt." NIV 15 where he stayed until the death of Herod. And so was fulfilled what the Lord had said through the prophet: "Out of Egypt I called my son." GNT 16 When Herod realized that the visitors from the East had tricked him, he was furious. He gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its neighborhood who were two years old and younger - this was done in accordance with what he had learned from the visitors about the time when the star had appeared. NIV 16 When Herod realized that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious, and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had learned from the Magi. GNT 17 In this way what the prophet Jeremiah had said came true: NIV 17 Then what was said through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled: GNT 18 "A sound is heard in Ramah, the sound of bitter weeping. Rachel is crying for her children; she refuses to be comforted, for they are dead." NIV 18 "A voice is heard in Ramah, weeping and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children and refusing to be comforted, because they are no more." GNT 19 After Herod died, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt NIV 19 After Herod died, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt GNT 20 and said, "Get up, take the child and his mother, and go back to the land of Israel, because those who tried to kill the child are dead." NIV 20 and said, "Get up, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who were trying to take the child's life are dead." GNT 21 So Joseph got up, took the child and his mother, and went back to Israel. NIV 21 So he got up, took the child and his mother and went to the land of Israel. GNT 22 But when Joseph heard that Archelaus had succeeded his father Herod as king of Judea, he was afraid to go there. He was given more instructions in a dream, so he went to the province of Galilee NIV 22 But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning in Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. Having been warned in a dream, he withdrew to the district of Galilee, GNT 23 and made his home in a town named Nazareth. And so what the prophets had said came true: "He will be called a Nazarene." NIV 23 and he went and lived in a town called Nazareth. So was fulfilled what was said through the prophets: "He will be called a Nazarene."
