Matthew 22:1-14

CEB 1 Jesus responded by speaking again in parables: NRS 1 Once more Jesus spoke to them in parables, saying: CEB 2 “The kingdom of heaven is like a king who prepared a wedding party for his son. NRS 2 "The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who gave a wedding banquet for his son. CEB 3 He sent his servants to call those invited to the wedding party. But they didn't want to come. NRS 3 He sent his slaves to call those who had been invited to the wedding banquet, but they would not come. CEB 4 Again he sent other servants and said to them, ‘Tell those who have been invited, "Look, the meal is all prepared. I've butchered the oxen and the fattened cattle. Now everything's ready. Come to the wedding party!" ' NRS 4 Again he sent other slaves, saying, "Tell those who have been invited: Look, I have prepared my dinner, my oxen and my fat calves have been slaughtered, and everything is ready; come to the wedding banquet.' CEB 5 But they paid no attention and went away—some to their fields, others to their businesses. NRS 5 But they made light of it and went away, one to his farm, another to his business, CEB 6 The rest of them grabbed his servants, abused them, and killed them. NRS 6 while the rest seized his slaves, mistreated them, and killed them. CEB 7 “The king was angry. He sent his soldiers to destroy those murderers and set their city on fire. NRS 7 The king was enraged. He sent his troops, destroyed those murderers, and burned their city. CEB 8 Then he said to his servants, ‘The wedding party is prepared, but those who were invited weren't worthy. NRS 8 Then he said to his slaves, "The wedding is ready, but those invited were not worthy. CEB 9 Therefore, go to the roads on the edge of town and invite everyone you find to the wedding party.' NRS 9 Go therefore into the main streets, and invite everyone you find to the wedding banquet.' CEB 10 “Then those servants went to the roads and gathered everyone they found, both evil and good. The wedding party was full of guests. NRS 10 Those slaves went out into the streets and gathered all whom they found, both good and bad; so the wedding hall was filled with guests. CEB 11 Now when the king came in and saw the guests, he spotted a man who wasn't wearing wedding clothes. NRS 11 "But when the king came in to see the guests, he noticed a man there who was not wearing a wedding robe, CEB 12 He said to him, ‘Friend, how did you get in here without wedding clothes?' But he was speechless. NRS 12 and he said to him, "Friend, how did you get in here without a wedding robe?' And he was speechless. CEB 13 Then the king said to his servants, ‘Tie his hands and feet and throw him out into the farthest darkness. People there will be weeping and grinding their teeth.' NRS 13 Then the king said to the attendants, "Bind him hand and foot, and throw him into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.' CEB 14 "Many people are invited, but few people are chosen." NRS 14 For many are called, but few are chosen."
