Matthew 2:1-12

CEB 1 After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in the territory of Judea during the rule of King Herod, magi came from the east to Jerusalem. NRS 1 In the time of King Herod, after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, CEB 2 They asked, "Where is the newborn king of the Jews? We've seen his star in the east, and we've come to honor him." NRS 2 asking, "Where is the child who has been born king of the Jews? For we observed his star at its rising, and have come to pay him homage." CEB 3 When King Herod heard this, he was troubled, and everyone in Jerusalem was troubled with him. NRS 3 When King Herod heard this, he was frightened, and all Jerusalem with him; CEB 4 He gathered all the chief priests and the legal experts and asked them where the Christ was to be born. NRS 4 and calling together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Messiah was to be born. CEB 5 They said, "In Bethlehem of Judea, for this is what the prophet wrote: NRS 5 They told him, "In Bethlehem of Judea; for so it has been written by the prophet: CEB 6 You, Bethlehem, land of Judah, by no means are you least among the rulers of Judah, because from you will come one who governs, who will shepherd my people Israel." NRS 6 "And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who is to shepherd my people Israel.' " CEB 7 Then Herod secretly called for the magi and found out from them the time when the star had first appeared. NRS 7 Then Herod secretly called for the wise men and learned from them the exact time when the star had appeared. CEB 8 He sent them to Bethlehem, saying, "Go and search carefully for the child. When you've found him, report to me so that I too may go and honor him." NRS 8 Then he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, "Go and search diligently for the child; and when you have found him, bring me word so that I may also go and pay him homage." CEB 9 When they heard the king, they went; and look, the star they had seen in the east went ahead of them until it stood over the place where the child was. NRS 9 When they had heard the king, they set out; and there, ahead of them, went the star that they had seen at its rising, until it stopped over the place where the child was. CEB 10 When they saw the star, they were filled with joy. NRS 10 When they saw that the star had stopped, they were overwhelmed with joy. CEB 11 They entered the house and saw the child with Mary his mother. Falling to their knees, they honored him. Then they opened their treasure chests and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. NRS 11 On entering the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother; and they knelt down and paid him homage. Then, opening their treasure chests, they offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. CEB 12 Because they were warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they went back to their own country by another route. NRS 12 And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they left for their own country by another road.
