NAS 1 When Jesus saw the crowds, He went up on the mountain; and after He sat down, His disciples came to Him. NIV 1 Now when he saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, NAS 2 He opened His mouth and began to teach them, saying, NIV 2 and he began to teach them, saying: NAS 3 "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. NAS 16 "Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven. NIV 16 In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven. NAS 17 "Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill. NIV 17 "Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. NAS 18 "For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass from the Law until all is accomplished. NIV 18 I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. NAS 19 "Whoever then annuls one of the least of these commandments, and teaches others to do the same, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever keeps and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. NIV 19 Anyone who breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. NAS 20 "For I say to you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven. NIV 20 For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven. NAS 21 "You have heard that the ancients were told, 'YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT MURDER ' and 'Whoever commits murder shall be liable to the court.' NIV 21 "You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, 'Do not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.' NAS 22 "But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother shall be guilty before the court; and whoever says to his brother, 'You good-for-nothing,' shall be guilty before the supreme court; and whoever says, 'You fool,' shall be guilty enough to go into the fiery hell. NIV 22 But I tell you that anyone who is angry with his brother will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to his brother, 'Raca, ' is answerable to the Sanhedrin. But anyone who says, 'You fool!' will be in danger of the fire of hell. NAS 23 "Therefore if you are presenting your offering at the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you, NIV 23 "Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, NAS 24 leave your offering there before the altar and go; first be reconciled to your brother, and then come and present your offering. NIV 24 leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to your brother; then come and offer your gift. NAS 25 "Make friends quickly with your opponent at law while you are with him on the way, so that your opponent may not hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the officer, and you be thrown into prison. NIV 25 "Settle matters quickly with your adversary who is taking you to court. Do it while you are still with him on the way, or he may hand you over to the judge, and the judge may hand you over to the officer, and you may be thrown into prison. NAS 26 "Truly I say to you, you will not come out of there until you have paid up the last cent. NIV 26 I tell you the truth, you will not get out until you have paid the last penny. NAS 27 "You have heard that it was said, 'YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT ADULTERY '; NIV 27 "You have heard that it was said, 'Do not commit adultery.' NAS 28 but I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart. NIV 28 But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart. NAS 29 "If your right eye makes you stumble, tear it out and throw it from you; for it is better for you to lose one of the parts of your body, than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. NIV 29 If your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. NAS 30 "If your right hand makes you stumble, cut it off and throw it from you; for it is better for you to lose one of the parts of your body, than for your whole body to go into hell. NAS 32 but I say to you that everyone who divorces his wife, except for the reason of unchastity, makes her commit adultery; and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery. NIV 32 But I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for marital unfaithfulness, causes her to become an adulteress, and anyone who marries the divorced woman commits adultery. NAS 33 "Again, you have heard that the ancients were told, 'YOU SHALL NOT MAKE FALSE VOWS, BUT SHALL FULFILL YOUR VOWS TO THE LORD .' NIV 33 "Again, you have heard that it was said to the people long ago, 'Do not break your oath, but keep the oaths you have made to the Lord.' NAS 34 "But I say to you, make no oath at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God, NIV 34 But I tell you, Do not swear at all: either by heaven, for it is God's throne; NAS 35 or by the earth, for it is the footstool of His feet, or by Jerusalem, for it is THE CITY OF THE GREAT KING. NIV 35 or by the earth, for it is his footstool; or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the Great King. NAS 36 "Nor shall you make an oath by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black. NIV 36 And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make even one hair white or black. NAS 37 "But let your statement be, 'Yes, yes ' or 'No, no '; anything beyond these is of evil. NIV 37 Simply let your 'Yes' be 'Yes,' and your 'No,' 'No'; anything beyond this comes from the evil one. NAS 38 "You have heard that it was said, 'AN EYE FOR AN EYE, AND A TOOTH FOR A TOOTH.' NIV 38 "You have heard that it was said, 'Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.' NAS 39 "But I say to you, do not resist an evil person; but whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also. NIV 39 But I tell you, Do not resist an evil person. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. NAS 40 "If anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, let him have your coat also. NIV 40 And if someone wants to sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well. NAS 41 "Whoever forces you to go one mile, go with him two. NIV 41 If someone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles. NAS 42 "Give to him who asks of you, and do not turn away from him who wants to borrow from you. NIV 42 Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you. NAS 43 "You have heard that it was said, 'YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR and hate your enemy.' NIV 43 "You have heard that it was said, 'Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' NAS 44 "But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, NIV 44 But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, NAS 45 so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven; for He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. NIV 45 that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. NAS 46 "For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? NIV 46 If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? NAS 47 "If you greet only your brothers, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? NIV 47 And if you greet only your brothers, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? NAS 48 "Therefore you are to be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect. NIV 48 Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.
