Matthew 5:17-37

CEB 17 “Don't even begin to think that I have come to do away with the Law and the Prophets. I haven't come to do away with them but to fulfill them. NRS 17 "Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets; I have come not to abolish but to fulfill. CEB 18 I say to you very seriously that as long as heaven and earth exist, neither the smallest letter nor even the smallest stroke of a pen will be erased from the Law until everything there becomes a reality. NRS 18 For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth pass away, not one letter, not one stroke of a letter, will pass from the law until all is accomplished. CEB 19 Therefore, whoever ignores one of the least of these commands and teaches others to do the same will be called the lowest in the kingdom of heaven. But whoever keeps these commands and teaches people to keep them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. NRS 19 Therefore, whoever breaks one of the least of these commandments, and teaches others to do the same, will be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. CEB 20 I say to you that unless your righteousness is greater than the righteousness of the legal experts and the Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. NRS 20 For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. CEB 21 “You have heard that it was said to those who lived long ago, Don't commit murder, and all who commit murder will be in danger of judgment. NRS 21 "You have heard that it was said to those of ancient times, "You shall not murder'; and "whoever murders shall be liable to judgment.' CEB 22 But I say to you that everyone who is angry with their brother or sister will be in danger of judgment. If they say to their brother or sister, ‘You idiot,' they will be in danger of being condemned by the governing council. And if they say, ‘You fool,' they will be in danger of fiery hell. NRS 22 But I say to you that if you are angry with a brother or sister, you will be liable to judgment; and if you insult a brother or sister, you will be liable to the council; and if you say, "You fool,' you will be liable to the hell of fire. CEB 23 Therefore, if you bring your gift to the altar and there remember that your brother or sister has something against you, NRS 23 So when you are offering your gift at the altar, if you remember that your brother or sister has something against you, CEB 24 leave your gift at the altar and go. First make things right with your brother or sister and then come back and offer your gift. NRS 24 leave your gift there before the altar and go; first be reconciled to your brother or sister, and then come and offer your gift. CEB 25 Be sure to make friends quickly with your opponents while you are with them on the way to court. Otherwise, they will haul you before the judge, the judge will turn you over to the officer of the court, and you will be thrown into prison. NRS 25 Come to terms quickly with your accuser while you are on the way to court with him, or your accuser may hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the guard, and you will be thrown into prison. CEB 26 I say to you in all seriousness that you won't get out of there until you've paid the very last penny. NRS 26 Truly I tell you, you will never get out until you have paid the last penny. CEB 27 “You have heard that it was said, Don't commit adultery. NRS 27 "You have heard that it was said, "You shall not commit adultery.' CEB 28 But I say to you that every man who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery in his heart. NRS 28 But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart. CEB 29 And if your right eye causes you to fall into sin, tear it out and throw it away. It's better that you lose a part of your body than that your whole body be thrown into hell. NRS 29 If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away; it is better for you to lose one of your members than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. CEB 30 And if your right hand causes you to fall into sin, chop it off and throw it away. It's better that you lose a part of your body than that your whole body go into hell. NRS 30 And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away; it is better for you to lose one of your members than for your whole body to go into hell. CEB 31 “It was said, ‘Whoever divorces his wife must give her a divorce certificate.' NRS 31 "It was also said, "Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.' CEB 32 But I say to you that whoever divorces his wife except for sexual unfaithfulness forces her to commit adultery. And whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery. NRS 32 But I say to you that anyone who divorces his wife, except on the ground of unchastity, causes her to commit adultery; and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery. CEB 33 “Again you have heard that it was said to those who lived long ago: Don't make a false solemn pledge, but you should follow through on what you have pledged to the Lord. NRS 33 "Again, you have heard that it was said to those of ancient times, "You shall not swear falsely, but carry out the vows you have made to the Lord.' CEB 34 But I say to you that you must not pledge at all. You must not pledge by heaven, because it's God's throne. NRS 34 But I say to you, Do not swear at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God, CEB 35 You must not pledge by the earth, because it's God's footstool. You must not pledge by Jerusalem, because it's the city of the great king. NRS 35 or by the earth, for it is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. CEB 36 And you must not pledge by your head, because you can't turn one hair white or black. NRS 36 And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black. CEB 37 Let your yes mean yes, and your no mean no. Anything more than this comes from the evil one. NRS 37 Let your word be "Yes, Yes' or "No, No'; anything more than this comes from the evil one.
