CEB 3 They assembled against Moses and Aaron and said to them, "You've gone too far, because the entire community is holy, every last one of them, and the LORD is with them. Why then do you exalt yourselves above the LORD's assembly?" NIV 3 They came as a group to oppose Moses and Aaron and said to them, "You have gone too far! CEB 9 isn't it enough for you that Israel's God has separated you from the Israelite community to allow you to approach him, to perform the service of the LORD's dwelling, and to serve before the community by ministering for them? NIV 9 Isn't it enough for you that the God of Israel has separated you from the rest of the Israelite community and brought you near himself to do the work at the LORD's tabernacle and to stand before the community and minister to them? CEB 10 He has allowed you and all your fellow Levites with you to approach him. Yet you also seek the priesthood? NIV 10 He has brought you and all your fellow Levites near himself, but now you are trying to get the priesthood too. CEB 11 Thus you and your entire community have assembled against the LORD. But Aaron, what is he that you complain about him?" NIV 11 It is against the LORD that you and all your followers have banded together. Who is Aaron that you should grumble against him?" CEB 13 Isn't it enough that you've brought us up from a land full of milk and honey to kill us in the desert so that you'd also dominate us? NIV 13 Isn't it enough that you have brought us up out of a land flowing with milk and honey to kill us in the desert? And now you also want to lord it over us? CEB 14 Moreover, you haven't brought us to a land full of milk and honey, nor given us the inheritance of field and vineyard. Would you also gouge out the eyes of these men? We won't come up!" NIV 14 Moreover, you haven't brought us into a land flowing with milk and honey or given us an inheritance of fields and vineyards. Will you gouge out the eyes of these men? No, we will not come!" CEB 15 Moses became very angry and he said to the LORD, "Pay no attention to their offering. I haven't taken a single donkey from them, nor have I wronged any one of them." NIV 15 Then Moses became very angry and said to the LORD, "Do not accept their offering. I have not taken so much as a donkey from them, nor have I wronged any of them." CEB 16 Moses said to Korah, "You and your entire community should appear before the LORD tomorrow, you, they, and Aaron. NIV 16 Moses said to Korah, "You and all your followers are to appear before the LORD tomorrow--you and they and Aaron. CEB 17 Every person should take his censer, place incense on it, and present it before the LORD. Each person will carry his censer, two hundred fifty censers in all, including you and Aaron." NIV 17 Each man is to take his censer and put incense in it--250 censers in all--and present it before the LORD. You and Aaron are to present your censers also." CEB 18 Then every person took his censer, placed fire on it, put incense on it, and stood at the entrance of the meeting tent with Moses and Aaron. NIV 18 So each man took his censer, put fire and incense in it, and stood with Moses and Aaron at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting. CEB 19 Korah gathered the entire community with them to the entrance of the meeting tent. Then the LORD's glory appeared to the entire community. If one person sins, should you become angry with the entire community?" NIV 22 But Moses and Aaron fell facedown and cried out, "O God, God of the spirits of all mankind, will you be angry with the entire assembly when only one man sins?" CEB 23 The LORD said to Moses, NIV 23 Then the LORD said to Moses, CEB 24 "Speak to the community and say, ‘Withdraw from around the dwellings of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram.'" NIV 24 "Say to the assembly, 'Move away from the tents of Korah, Dathan and Abiram.' " CEB 25 Moses rose and went to Dathan and Abiram. Israel's elders followed him. NIV 26 He warned the assembly, "Move back from the tents of these wicked men! Do not touch anything belonging to them, or you will be swept away because of all their sins." CEB 27 They withdrew from around the dwellings of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram. Then Dathan and Abiram came out and stood at the entrance of their tents with their wives, children, and little ones. NIV 27 So they moved away from the tents of Korah, Dathan and Abiram. Dathan and Abiram had come out and were standing with their wives, children and little ones at the entrances to their tents. CEB 28 Moses said, "By this you will know that the LORD sent me to do these deeds and that it wasn't my own desire. NIV 28 Then Moses said, "This is how you will know that the LORD has sent me to do all these things and that it was not my idea: CEB 29 If all these people die a natural death, or if their fate be that of all humans, then the LORD hasn't sent me. NIV 29 If these men die a natural death and experience only what usually happens to men, then the LORD has not sent me. CEB 30 But if the LORD performs an act of creation, and the ground opens its mouth and swallows them and everything that belongs to them, so that they descend alive to their graves, then you'll know that these men disrespected the LORD." NIV 30 But if the LORD brings about something totally new, and the earth opens its mouth and swallows them, with everything that belongs to them, and they go down alive into the grave, then you will know that these men have treated the LORD with contempt." NIV 31 As soon as he finished saying all this, the ground under them split apart CEB 32 The earth opened its mouth and swallowed them and their households, including every human that belonged to Korah and all their possessions. NIV 32 and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them, with their households and all Korah's men and all their possessions. CEB 33 They along with all their possessions descended alive to their graves, and the earth closed over them. They perished in the middle of the assembly. NIV 33 They went down alive into the grave, with everything they owned; the earth closed over them, and they perished and were gone from the community. CEB 34 All the Israelites who were around them fled at their cry, for they said, "The earth may swallow us." NIV 34 At their cries, all the Israelites around them fled, shouting, "The earth is going to swallow us too!" CEB 35 Then fire went out from the LORD and consumed the two hundred fifty men offering incense. NIV 35 And fire came out from the LORD and consumed the 250 men who were offering the incense. CEB 36 The LORD spoke to Moses: NIV 36 The LORD said to Moses, CEB 37 Tell Eleazar, Aaron the priest's son, to raise the censers from the fire and scatter the ashes about, because they are holy. NIV 37 "Tell Eleazar son of Aaron, the priest, to take the censers out of the smoldering remains and scatter the coals some distance away, for the censers are holy-- CEB 38 Hammer the censers of those who sinned and lost their lives into thin plates for the altar. Hammer the censers into sheets to overlay the altar, for they were presented before the LORD and have become holy. Let them be a sign to the Israelites." CEB 39 Eleazar the priest took the bronze censers presented by those who had been consumed by fire and hammered them into a covering for the altar, NIV 39 So Eleazar the priest collected the bronze censers brought by those who had been burned up, and he had them hammered out to overlay the altar, CEB 40 just as the LORD instructed him through Moses. This was a reminder for the Israelites that no outsider who isn't one of Aaron's descendants should approach to burn incense in the LORD's presence, so as not to be like Korah and his community. NIV 40 as the LORD directed him through Moses. This was to remind the Israelites that no one except a descendant of Aaron should come to burn incense before the LORD, or he would become like Korah and his followers. CEB 41 On the next day the entire Israelite community complained to Moses and Aaron, "You killed the LORD's people." NIV 41 The next day the whole Israelite community grumbled against Moses and Aaron. "You have killed the LORD's people," they said. CEB 42 When the community assembled against Moses and Aaron, they turned toward the meeting tent. At that moment the cloud covered it, and the LORD's glory appeared. NIV 42 But when the assembly gathered in opposition to Moses and Aaron and turned toward the Tent of Meeting, suddenly the cloud covered it and the glory of the LORD appeared. CEB 43 Moses and Aaron came to the front of the meeting tent, NIV 43 Then Moses and Aaron went to the front of the Tent of Meeting, CEB 44 and the LORD spoke to Moses: NIV 44 and the LORD said to Moses, CEB 45 Get away from this community, so that I may consume them in an instant. They fell on their faces, NIV 45 "Get away from this assembly so I can put an end to them at once." And they fell facedown. CEB 46 and Moses said to Aaron, "Take the censer, put fire from the altar on it, place incense on it, go quickly to the community, and seek reconciliation for them. Indeed, the LORD's anger has gone out. The plague has begun." NIV 46 Then Moses said to Aaron, "Take your censer and put incense in it, along with fire from the altar, and hurry to the assembly to make atonement for them. Wrath has come out from the LORD; the plague has started." CEB 47 Aaron took it as Moses said and ran into the middle of the assembly, for the plague had already begun among the people. He burned incense and sought reconciliation for the people. NIV 47 So Aaron did as Moses said, and ran into the midst of the assembly. The plague had already started among the people, but Aaron offered the incense and made atonement for them. CEB 48 He stood between the dead and the living, and the plague stopped. NIV 48 He stood between the living and the dead, and the plague stopped. CEB 49 Those who died from the plague were fourteen thousand seven hundred, in addition to those who died because of Korah. NIV 49 But 14,700 people died from the plague, in addition to those who had died because of Korah. CEB 50 Aaron returned to Moses at the entrance of the meeting tent once the plague stopped. NIV 50 Then Aaron returned to Moses at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting, for the plague had stopped.
