Numbers 21

WBT 1 And [when] king Arad the Canaanite, who dwelt in the south, heard that Israel came by the way of the spies; then he fought against Israel, and took [some] of them prisoners. NIV 1 When the Canaanite king of Arad, who lived in the Negev, heard that Israel was coming along the road to Atharim, he attacked the Israelites and captured some of them. WBT 2 And Israel vowed a vow to the LORD, and said, If thou wilt indeed deliver this people into my hand, then I will utterly destroy their cities. NIV 2 Then Israel made this vow to the LORD: "If you will deliver these people into our hands, we will totally destroy their cities." WBT 3 And the LORD hearkened to the voice of Israel, and delivered up the Canaanites; and they utterly destroyed them and their cities: and he called the name of the place Hormah. NIV 3 The LORD listened to Israel's plea and gave the Canaanites over to them. They completely destroyed them and their towns; so the place was named Hormah. WBT 4 And they journeyed from mount Hor by the way of the Red sea, to compass the land of Edom: and the soul of the people was much discouraged because of the way. NIV 4 They traveled from Mount Hor along the route to the Red Sea, to go around Edom. But the people grew impatient on the way; WBT 5 And the people spoke against God, and against Moses, Why have ye brought us out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? for [there is] no bread, neither [is there any] water; and our soul lotheth this light bread. NIV 5 they spoke against God and against Moses, and said, "Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the desert? There is no bread! There is no water! And we detest this miserable food!" WBT 6 And the LORD sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and many people of Israel died. NIV 6 Then the LORD sent venomous snakes among them; they bit the people and many Israelites died. WBT 7 Therefore the people came to Moses, and said, We have sinned, for we have spoken against the LORD, and against thee; pray to the LORD, that he take away the serpents from us. And Moses prayed for the people. NIV 7 The people came to Moses and said, "We sinned when we spoke against the LORD and against you. Pray that the LORD will take the snakes away from us." So Moses prayed for the people. WBT 8 And the LORD said to Moses, Make thee a fiery serpent, and set it upon a pole: and it shall come to pass, that every one that is bitten, when he looketh upon it, shall live. NIV 8 The LORD said to Moses, "Make a snake and put it up on a pole; anyone who is bitten can look at it and live." WBT 9 And Moses made a serpent of brass, and put it upon a pole, and it came to pass, that if a serpent had bitten any man, when he beheld the serpent of brass, he lived. NIV 9 So Moses made a bronze snake and put it up on a pole. Then when anyone was bitten by a snake and looked at the bronze snake, he lived. WBT 10 And the children of Israel moved forward, and pitched in Oboth. NIV 10 The Israelites moved on and camped at Oboth. WBT 11 And they journeyed from Oboth, and pitched at Ije-abarim, in the wilderness which [is] before Moab, towards the sun-rising. NIV 11 Then they set out from Oboth and camped in Iye Abarim, in the desert that faces Moab toward the sunrise. WBT 12 From thence they removed, and pitched in the valley of Zared. NIV 12 From there they moved on and camped in the Zered Valley. WBT 13 From thence they removed, and pitched on the other side of Arnon, which [is] in the wilderness that cometh out of the coasts of the Amorites: for Arnon [is] the border of Moab, between Moab and the Amorites. NIV 13 They set out from there and camped alongside the Arnon, which is in the desert extending into Amorite territory. The Arnon is the border of Moab, between Moab and the Amorites. WBT 14 Wherefore it is said in the book of the wars of the LORD, What he did in the Red sea, and in the brooks of Arnon, NIV 14 That is why the Book of the Wars of the LORD says: ". . . Waheb in Suphah and the ravines, the Arnon WBT 15 And at the stream of the brooks that goeth down to the dwelling of Ar, and lieth upon the border of Moab. NIV 15 and the slopes of the ravines that lead to the site of Ar and lie along the border of Moab." WBT 16 And from thence [they went] to Beer: that [is] the well of which the LORD spoke to Moses, Assemble the people, and I will give them water. NIV 16 From there they continued on to Beer, the well where the LORD said to Moses, "Gather the people together and I will give them water." WBT 17 Then Israel sung this song, Spring up, O well; sing ye to it: NIV 17 Then Israel sang this song: "Spring up, O well! Sing about it, WBT 18 The princes digged the well, the nobles of the people digged it, by [the direction of] the lawgiver, with their staffs. And from the wilderness [they went] to Mattanah: NIV 18 about the well that the princes dug, that the nobles of the people sank-- the nobles with scepters and staffs." Then they went from the desert to Mattanah, WBT 19 And from Mattanah to Nahaliel: and from Nahaliel to Bamoth: NIV 19 from Mattanah to Nahaliel, from Nahaliel to Bamoth, WBT 20 And from Bamoth [in] the valley, that [is] in the country of Moab, to the top of Pisgah, which looketh towards Jeshimon. NIV 20 and from Bamoth to the valley in Moab where the top of Pisgah overlooks the wasteland. WBT 21 And Israel sent messengers to Sihon king of the Amorites, saying, NIV 21 Israel sent messengers to say to Sihon king of the Amorites: WBT 22 Let me pass through thy land: we will not turn into the fields, or into the vineyards; we will not drink [of] the waters of the well: [but] we will go along by the king's [high]-way, until we have past thy borders. NIV 22 "Let us pass through your country. We will not turn aside into any field or vineyard, or drink water from any well. We will travel along the king's highway until we have passed through your territory." WBT 23 And Sihon would not suffer Israel to pass through his border: but Sihon collected all his people, and went out against Israel into the wilderness: and he came to Jahaz, and fought against Israel: NIV 23 But Sihon would not let Israel pass through his territory. He mustered his entire army and marched out into the desert against Israel. When he reached Jahaz, he fought with Israel. WBT 24 And Israel smote him with the edge of the sword, and possessed his land from Arnon to Jabbok, even to the children of Ammon: for the border of the children of Ammon [was] strong. NIV 24 Israel, however, put him to the sword and took over his land from the Arnon to the Jabbok, but only as far as the Ammonites, because their border was fortified. WBT 25 And Israel took all these cities: and Israel dwelt in all the cities of the Amorites, in Heshbon, and in all its villages. NIV 25 Israel captured all the cities of the Amorites and occupied them, including Heshbon and all its surrounding settlements. WBT 26 For Heshbon [was] the city of Sihon the king of the Amorites, who had fought against the former king of Moab, and taken all his land out of his hand, even to Arnon. NIV 26 Heshbon was the city of Sihon king of the Amorites, who had fought against the former king of Moab and had taken from him all his land as far as the Arnon. WBT 27 Wherefore they that speak in proverbs say, Come into Heshbon, let the city of Sihon be built and prepared. NIV 27 That is why the poets say: "Come to Heshbon and let it be rebuilt; let Sihon's city be restored. WBT 28 For there has a fire gone out of Heshbon, a flame from the city of Sihon: it hath consumed Ar of Moab, [and] the lords of the high places of Arnon. NIV 28 "Fire went out from Heshbon, a blaze from the city of Sihon. It consumed Ar of Moab, the citizens of Arnon's heights. WBT 29 Woe to thee, Moab! thou art undone, O people of Chemosh: he hath given his sons that escaped, and his daughters, into captivity to Sihon king of the Amorites. NIV 29 Woe to you, O Moab! You are destroyed, O people of Chemosh! He has given up his sons as fugitives and his daughters as captives to Sihon king of the Amorites. WBT 30 We have shot at them; Heshbon has perished even to Dibon, and we have laid them waste even to Nophah, which [reacheth] to Medeba. NIV 30 "But we have overthrown them; Heshbon is destroyed all the way to Dibon. We have demolished them as far as Nophah, which extends to Medeba." WBT 31 Thus Israel dwelt in the land of the Amorites. NIV 31 So Israel settled in the land of the Amorites. WBT 32 And Moses sent to explore Jaazer, and they took its villages, and drove out the Amorites that [were] there. NIV 32 After Moses had sent spies to Jazer, the Israelites captured its surrounding settlements and drove out the Amorites who were there. WBT 33 And they turned and went up by the way of Bashan: and Og the king of Bashan went out against them, he, and all his people, to the battle at Edrei. NIV 33 Then they turned and went up along the road toward Bashan, and Og king of Bashan and his whole army marched out to meet them in battle at Edrei. WBT 34 And the LORD said to Moses, Fear him not: for I have delivered him into thy hand, and all his people, and his land; and thou shalt do to him as thou didst to Sihon king of the Amorites, who dwelt at Heshbon. NIV 34 The LORD said to Moses, "Do not be afraid of him, for I have handed him over to you, with his whole army and his land. Do to him what you did to Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon." WBT 35 So they smote him, and his sons, and all his people, until there was none left to him alive: and they possessed his land. NIV 35 So they struck him down, together with his sons and his whole army, leaving them no survivors. And they took possession of his land.
