KJV 1 And the children of Israel set forward , and pitched in the plains of Moab on this side Jordan by Jericho. NIV 1 Then the Israelites traveled to the plains of Moab and camped along the Jordan across from Jericho. KJV 2 And Balak the son of Zippor saw all that Israel had done to the Amorites. NIV 2 Now Balak son of Zippor saw all that Israel had done to the Amorites, KJV 3 And Moab was sore afraid of the people, because they were many: and Moab was distressed because of the children of Israel. NIV 3 and Moab was terrified because there were so many people. Indeed, Moab was filled with dread because of the Israelites. KJV 4 And Moab said unto the elders of Midian, Now shall this company lick up all that are round about us, as the ox licketh up the grass of the field. And Balak the son of Zippor was king of the Moabites at that time. NIV 4 The Moabites said to the elders of Midian, "This horde is going to lick up everything around us, as an ox licks up the grass of the field." So Balak son of Zippor, who was king of Moab at that time, KJV 5 He sent messengers therefore unto Balaam the son of Beor to Pethor, which is by the river of the land of the children of his people, to call him, saying , Behold, there is a people come out from Egypt: behold, they cover the face of the earth, and they abide over against me: NIV 5 sent messengers to summon Balaam son of Beor, who was at Pethor, near the River, in his native land. Balak said: "A people has come out of Egypt; they cover the face of the land and have settled next to me. KJV 6 Come now therefore, I pray thee, curse me this people; for they are too mighty for me: peradventure I shall prevail , that we may smite them, and that I may drive them out of the land: for I wot that he whom thou blessest is blessed , and he whom thou cursest is cursed . NIV 6 Now come and put a curse on these people, because they are too powerful for me. Perhaps then I will be able to defeat them and drive them out of the country. For I know that those you bless are blessed, and those you curse are cursed." KJV 7 And the elders of Moab and the elders of Midian departed with the rewards of divination in their hand; and they came unto Balaam, and spake unto him the words of Balak. NIV 7 The elders of Moab and Midian left, taking with them the fee for divination. When they came to Balaam, they told him what Balak had said. KJV 8 And he said unto them, Lodge here this night, and I will bring you word again , as the LORD shall speak unto me: and the princes of Moab abode with Balaam. NIV 8 "Spend the night here," Balaam said to them, "and I will bring you back the answer the LORD gives me." So the Moabite princes stayed with him. KJV 9 And God came unto Balaam, and said , What men are these with thee? NIV 9 God came to Balaam and asked, "Who are these men with you?" KJV 10 And Balaam said unto God, Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab, hath sent unto me, saying, NIV 10 Balaam said to God, "Balak son of Zippor, king of Moab, sent me this message: KJV 11 Behold, there is a people come out of Egypt, which covereth the face of the earth: come now, curse me them; peradventure I shall be able to overcome them, and drive them out . NIV 11 'A people that has come out of Egypt covers the face of the land. Now come and put a curse on them for me. Perhaps then I will be able to fight them and drive them away.' " KJV 12 And God said unto Balaam, Thou shalt not go with them; thou shalt not curse the people: for they are blessed . NIV 12 But God said to Balaam, "Do not go with them. You must not put a curse on those people, because they are blessed." KJV 13 And Balaam rose up in the morning, and said unto the princes of Balak, Get you into your land: for the LORD refuseth to give me leave to go with you. NIV 13 The next morning Balaam got up and said to Balak's princes, "Go back to your own country, for the LORD has refused to let me go with you." KJV 14 And the princes of Moab rose up , and they went unto Balak, and said , Balaam refuseth to come with us. NIV 14 So the Moabite princes returned to Balak and said, "Balaam refused to come with us." KJV 15 And Balak sent yet again princes, more, and more honourable than they. NIV 15 Then Balak sent other princes, more numerous and more distinguished than the first. KJV 16 And they came to Balaam, and said to him, Thus saith Balak the son of Zippor, Let nothing, I pray thee, hinder thee from coming unto me: NIV 16 They came to Balaam and said: "This is what Balak son of Zippor says: Do not let anything keep you from coming to me, KJV 17 For I will promote thee unto very great honour , and I will do whatsoever thou sayest unto me: come therefore, I pray thee, curse me this people. NIV 17 because I will reward you handsomely and do whatever you say. Come and put a curse on these people for me." KJV 18 And Balaam answered and said unto the servants of Balak, If Balak would give me his house full of silver and gold, I cannot go beyond the word of the LORD my God, to do less or more. NIV 18 But Balaam answered them, "Even if Balak gave me his palace filled with silver and gold, I could not do anything great or small to go beyond the command of the LORD my God. KJV 19 Now therefore, I pray you, tarry ye also here this night, that I may know what the LORD will say unto me more . NIV 19 Now stay here tonight as the others did, and I will find out what else the LORD will tell me." KJV 20 And God came unto Balaam at night, and said unto him, If the men come to call thee, rise up , and go with them; but yet the word which I shall say unto thee, that shalt thou do . NIV 20 That night God came to Balaam and said, "Since these men have come to summon you, go with them, but do only what I tell you." KJV 21 And Balaam rose up in the morning, and saddled his ass, and went with the princes of Moab. NIV 21 Balaam got up in the morning, saddled his donkey and went with the princes of Moab. KJV 22 And God's anger was kindled because he went : and the angel of the LORD stood in the way for an adversary against him. Now he was riding upon his ass, and his two servants were with him. NIV 22 But God was very angry when he went, and the angel of the LORD stood in the road to oppose him. Balaam was riding on his donkey, and his two servants were with him. KJV 23 And the ass saw the angel of the LORD standing in the way, and his sword drawn in his hand: and the ass turned aside out of the way, and went into the field: and Balaam smote the ass, to turn her into the way. NIV 23 When the donkey saw the angel of the LORD standing in the road with a drawn sword in his hand, she turned off the road into a field. Balaam beat her to get her back on the road. KJV 24 But the angel of the LORD stood in a path of the vineyards, a wall being on this side, and a wall on that side. NIV 24 Then the angel of the LORD stood in a narrow path between two vineyards, with walls on both sides. KJV 25 And when the ass saw the angel of the LORD, she thrust herself unto the wall, and crushed Balaam's foot against the wall: and he smote her again . NIV 25 When the donkey saw the angel of the LORD, she pressed close to the wall, crushing Balaam's foot against it. So he beat her again. KJV 26 And the angel of the LORD went further , and stood in a narrow place, where was no way to turn either to the right hand or to the left. KJV 28 And the LORD opened the mouth of the ass, and she said unto Balaam, What have I done unto thee, that thou hast smitten me these three times? NIV 28 Then the LORD opened the donkey's mouth, and she said to Balaam, "What have I done to you to make you beat me these three times?" KJV 29 And Balaam said unto the ass, Because thou hast mocked me: I would there were a sword in mine hand, for now would I kill thee. NIV 29 Balaam answered the donkey, "You have made a fool of me! If I had a sword in my hand, I would kill you right now." KJV 30 And the ass said unto Balaam, Am not I thine ass, upon which thou hast ridden ever since I was thine unto this day? was I ever wont to do so unto thee? And he said , Nay. NIV 30 The donkey said to Balaam, "Am I not your own donkey, which you have always ridden, to this day? Have I been in the habit of doing this to you?" "No," he said. KJV 31 Then the LORD opened the eyes of Balaam, and he saw the angel of the LORD standing in the way, and his sword drawn in his hand: and he bowed down his head, and fell flat on his face. NIV 31 Then the LORD opened Balaam's eyes, and he saw the angel of the LORD standing in the road with his sword drawn. So he bowed low and fell facedown. KJV 32 And the angel of the LORD said unto him, Wherefore hast thou smitten thine ass these three times? behold, I went out to withstand thee, because thy way is perverse before me: NIV 32 The angel of the LORD asked him, "Why have you beaten your donkey these three times? I have come here to oppose you because your path is a reckless one before me. KJV 33 And the ass saw me, and turned from me these three times: unless she had turned from me, surely now also I had slain thee, and saved her alive . KJV 40 And Balak offered oxen and sheep, and sent to Balaam, and to the princes that were with him. NIV 40 Balak sacrificed cattle and sheep, and gave some to Balaam and the princes who were with him. KJV 41 And it came to pass on the morrow, that Balak took Balaam, and brought him up into the high places of Baal, that thence he might see the utmost part of the people. NIV 41 The next morning Balak took Balaam up to Bamoth Baal, and from there he saw part of the people.
