Philippians 1:12-26

RSV 12 I want you to know, brethren, that what has happened to me has really served to advance the gospel, NIV 12 Now I want you to know, brothers, that what has happened to me has really served to advance the gospel. RSV 13 so that it has become known throughout the whole praetorian guard and to all the rest that my imprisonment is for Christ; NIV 13 As a result, it has become clear throughout the whole palace guard and to everyone else that I am in chains for Christ. RSV 14 and most of the brethren have been made confident in the Lord because of my imprisonment, and are much more bold to speak the word of God without fear. NIV 14 Because of my chains, most of the brothers in the Lord have been encouraged to speak the word of God more courageously and fearlessly. RSV 15 Some indeed preach Christ from envy and rivalry, but others from good will. NIV 15 It is true that some preach Christ out of envy and rivalry, but others out of goodwill. RSV 16 The latter do it out of love, knowing that I am put here for the defense of the gospel; NIV 16 The latter do so in love, knowing that I am put here for the defense of the gospel. RSV 17 the former proclaim Christ out of partisanship, not sincerely but thinking to afflict me in my imprisonment. NIV 17 The former preach Christ out of selfish ambition, not sincerely, supposing that they can stir up trouble for me while I am in chains. RSV 18 What then? Only that in every way, whether in pretense or in truth, Christ is proclaimed; and in that I rejoice. NIV 18 But what does it matter? The important thing is that in every way, whether from false motives or true, Christ is preached. And because of this I rejoice. Yes, and I will continue to rejoice, RSV 19 Yes, and I shall rejoice. For I know that through your prayers and the help of the Spirit of Jesus Christ this will turn out for my deliverance, NIV 19 for I know that through your prayers and the help given by the Spirit of Jesus Christ, what has happened to me will turn out for my deliverance. RSV 20 as it is my eager expectation and hope that I shall not be at all ashamed, but that with full courage now as always Christ will be honored in my body, whether by life or by death. NIV 20 I eagerly expect and hope that I will in no way be ashamed, but will have sufficient courage so that now as always Christ will be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death. RSV 21 For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. NIV 21 For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain. RSV 22 If it is to be life in the flesh, that means fruitful labor for me. Yet which I shall choose I cannot tell. NIV 22 If I am to go on living in the body, this will mean fruitful labor for me. Yet what shall I choose? I do not know! RSV 23 I am hard pressed between the two. My desire is to depart and be with Christ, for that is far better. NIV 23 I am torn between the two: I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far; RSV 24 But to remain in the flesh is more necessary on your account. NIV 24 but it is more necessary for you that I remain in the body. RSV 25 Convinced of this, I know that I shall remain and continue with you all, for your progress and joy in the faith, NIV 25 Convinced of this, I know that I will remain, and I will continue with all of you for your progress and joy in the faith, RSV 26 so that in me you may have ample cause to glory in Christ Jesus, because of my coming to you again. NIV 26 so that through my being with you again your joy in Christ Jesus will overflow on account of me.
