Proverbs 6

CJB 1 My son, if you have put up security for your friend, if you committed yourself on behalf of another; NIV 1 My son, if you have put up security for your neighbor, if you have struck hands in pledge for another, CJB 2 you have been snared by the words of your mouth, caught by the words of your own mouth. NIV 2 if you have been trapped by what you said, ensnared by the words of your mouth, CJB 3 Do this now, my son, and extricate yourself, since you put yourself in your friend's power: go, humble yourself, and pester your friend; NIV 3 then do this, my son, to free yourself, since you have fallen into your neighbor's hands: Go and humble yourself; press your plea with your neighbor! CJB 4 give your eyes no sleep, give your eyelids no rest; NIV 4 Allow no sleep to your eyes, no slumber to your eyelids. CJB 5 break free, like a gazelle from the [hunter's] trap, like a bird from the grip of the fowler. NIV 5 Free yourself, like a gazelle from the hand of the hunter, like a bird from the snare of the fowler. CJB 6 Go to the ant, you lazybones! Consider its ways, and be wise. NIV 6 Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be wise! CJB 7 It has no chief, overseer or ruler; NIV 7 It has no commander, no overseer or ruler, CJB 8 yet it provides its food in summer and gathers its supplies at harvest-time. NIV 8 yet it stores its provisions in summer and gathers its food at harvest. CJB 9 Lazybones! How long will you lie there in bed? When will you get up from your sleep? NIV 9 How long will you lie there, you sluggard? When will you get up from your sleep? CJB 10 "I'll just lie here a bit, rest a little longer, just fold my hands for a little more sleep"- NIV 10 A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest-- CJB 11 and poverty comes marching in on you, scarcity hits you like an invading soldier. NIV 11 and poverty will come on you like a bandit and scarcity like an armed man. CJB 12 A scoundrel, a vicious man, lives by crooked speech, NIV 12 A scoundrel and villain, who goes about with a corrupt mouth, CJB 13 winking his eyes, shuffling his feet, pointing with his fingers. NIV 13 who winks with his eye, signals with his feet and motions with his fingers, CJB 14 With deceit in his heart, he is always plotting evil and sowing discord. NIV 14 who plots evil with deceit in his heart-- he always stirs up dissension. CJB 15 Therefore disaster suddenly overcomes him; unexpectedly, he is broken beyond repair. NIV 15 Therefore disaster will overtake him in an instant; he will suddenly be destroyed--without remedy. CJB 16 There are six things ADONAI hates, seven which he detests: NIV 16 There are six things the LORD hates, seven that are detestable to him: CJB 17 a haughty look, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, NIV 17 haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, CJB 18 a heart that plots wicked schemes, feet swift in running to do evil, NIV 18 a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are quick to rush into evil, CJB 19 a false witness who lies with every breath, and him who sows strife among brothers. NIV 19 a false witness who pours out lies and a man who stirs up dissension among brothers. CJB 20 My son, obey your father's command, and don't abandon your mother's teaching. NIV 20 My son, keep your father's commands and do not forsake your mother's teaching. CJB 21 Bind them always on your heart, tie them around your neck. NIV 21 Bind them upon your heart forever; fasten them around your neck. CJB 22 When you walk, they will lead you; when you lie down, they will watch over you; and when you wake up, they will talk with you. NIV 22 When you walk, they will guide you; when you sleep, they will watch over you; when you awake, they will speak to you. CJB 23 For the mitzvah is a lamp, Torah is light, and reproofs that discipline are the way to life. NIV 23 For these commands are a lamp, this teaching is a light, and the corrections of discipline are the way to life, CJB 24 They keep you from an evil woman, from a loose woman's seductive tongue. NIV 24 keeping you from the immoral woman, from the smooth tongue of the wayward wife. CJB 25 Don't let your heart lust after her beauty or allow her glance to captivate you. NIV 25 Do not lust in your heart after her beauty or let her captivate you with her eyes, CJB 26 The price of a whore is a loaf of bread, but the adulteress is hunting for a precious life. NIV 26 for the prostitute reduces you to a loaf of bread, and the adulteress preys upon your very life. CJB 27 Can a man carry fire inside his shirt without burning his clothes? NIV 27 Can a man scoop fire into his lap without his clothes being burned? CJB 28 Can a man walk [barefoot] on hot coals without scorching his feet? NIV 28 Can a man walk on hot coals without his feet being scorched? CJB 29 So is he who has sex with his neighbor's wife; anyone touching her will be punished. NIV 29 So is he who sleeps with another man's wife; no one who touches her will go unpunished. CJB 30 A thief is not despised if he steals only to satisfy his appetite when hungry; NIV 30 Men do not despise a thief if he steals to satisfy his hunger when he is starving. CJB 31 but even he, if caught, must pay back sevenfold; he may have to give up all the wealth that he owns. NIV 31 Yet if he is caught, he must pay sevenfold, though it costs him all the wealth of his house. CJB 32 He who commits adultery lacks sense; he who does it destroys himself. NIV 32 But a man who commits adultery lacks judgment; whoever does so destroys himself. CJB 33 He will get nothing but blows and contempt, and his disgrace will not be wiped away. NIV 33 Blows and disgrace are his lot, and his shame will never be wiped away; CJB 34 For jealousy drives a man into a rage; he will show no mercy when he takes revenge; NIV 34 for jealousy arouses a husband's fury, and he will show no mercy when he takes revenge. CJB 35 he will not accept compensation; he'll refuse every bribe, no matter how large. NIV 35 He will not accept any compensation; he will refuse the bribe, however great it is.
