Proverbs 6

ESV 1 My son, if you have put up security for your neighbor, have given your pledge for a stranger, NIV 1 My son, if you have put up security for your neighbor, if you have struck hands in pledge for another, ESV 2 if you are snared in the words of your mouth, caught in the words of your mouth, NIV 2 if you have been trapped by what you said, ensnared by the words of your mouth, ESV 3 then do this, my son, and save yourself, for you have come into the hand of your neighbor: go, hasten, and plead urgently with your neighbor. NIV 3 then do this, my son, to free yourself, since you have fallen into your neighbor's hands: Go and humble yourself; press your plea with your neighbor! ESV 4 Give your eyes no sleep and your eyelids no slumber; NIV 4 Allow no sleep to your eyes, no slumber to your eyelids. ESV 5 save yourself like a gazelle from the hand of the hunter, like a bird from the hand of the fowler. ESV 15 therefore calamity will come upon him suddenly; in a moment he will be broken beyond healing. NIV 15 Therefore disaster will overtake him in an instant; he will suddenly be destroyed--without remedy. NIV 19 a false witness who pours out lies and a man who stirs up dissension among brothers. ESV 20 My son, keep your father's commandment, and forsake not your mother's teaching. NIV 20 My son, keep your father's commands and do not forsake your mother's teaching. ESV 21 Bind them on your heart always; tie them around your neck. NIV 21 Bind them upon your heart forever; fasten them around your neck. ESV 22 When you walk, they will lead you; when you lie down, they will watch over you; and when you awake, they will talk with you. NIV 22 When you walk, they will guide you; when you sleep, they will watch over you; when you awake, they will speak to you. ESV 23 For the commandment is a lamp and the teaching a light, and the reproofs of discipline are the way of life, NIV 23 For these commands are a lamp, this teaching is a light, and the corrections of discipline are the way to life, ESV 24 to preserve you from the evil woman, from the smooth tongue of the adulteress. NIV 24 keeping you from the immoral woman, from the smooth tongue of the wayward wife. ESV 25 Do not desire her beauty in your heart, and do not let her capture you with her eyelashes; NIV 25 Do not lust in your heart after her beauty or let her captivate you with her eyes, ESV 26 for the price of a prostitute is only a loaf of bread, but a married womanhunts down a precious life. NIV 26 for the prostitute reduces you to a loaf of bread, and the adulteress preys upon your very life. ESV 27 Can a man carry fire next to his chest and his clothes not be burned? NIV 27 Can a man scoop fire into his lap without his clothes being burned? ESV 28 Or can one walk on hot coals and his feet not be scorched? NIV 28 Can a man walk on hot coals without his feet being scorched? ESV 29 So is he who goes in to his neighbor's wife; none who touches her will go unpunished. NIV 29 So is he who sleeps with another man's wife; no one who touches her will go unpunished. ESV 30 People do not despise a thief if he steals to satisfy his appetite when he is hungry, NIV 30 Men do not despise a thief if he steals to satisfy his hunger when he is starving. ESV 31 but if he is caught, he will pay sevenfold; he will give all the goods of his house. NIV 31 Yet if he is caught, he must pay sevenfold, though it costs him all the wealth of his house. ESV 32 He who commits adultery lacks sense; he who does it destroys himself. NIV 32 But a man who commits adultery lacks judgment; whoever does so destroys himself. ESV 33 He will get wounds and dishonor, and his disgrace will not be wiped away. NIV 33 Blows and disgrace are his lot, and his shame will never be wiped away; ESV 34 For jealousy makes a man furious, and he will not spare when he takes revenge. NIV 34 for jealousy arouses a husband's fury, and he will show no mercy when he takes revenge. ESV 35 He will accept no compensation; he will refuse though you multiply gifts. NIV 35 He will not accept any compensation; he will refuse the bribe, however great it is.
