Proverbs 6

NKJV 1 My son, if you become surety for your friend, If you have shaken hands in pledge for a stranger, NIV 1 My son, if you have put up security for your neighbor, if you have struck hands in pledge for another, NKJV 2 You are snared by the words of your mouth; You are taken by the words of your mouth. NIV 2 if you have been trapped by what you said, ensnared by the words of your mouth, NKJV 3 So do this, my son, and deliver yourself; For you have come into the hand of your friend: Go and humble yourself; Plead with your friend. NIV 3 then do this, my son, to free yourself, since you have fallen into your neighbor's hands: Go and humble yourself; press your plea with your neighbor! NKJV 4 Give no sleep to your eyes, Nor slumber to your eyelids. NIV 4 Allow no sleep to your eyes, no slumber to your eyelids. NKJV 5 Deliver yourself like a gazelle from the hand of the hunter, And like a bird from the hand of the fowler. NIV 5 Free yourself, like a gazelle from the hand of the hunter, like a bird from the snare of the fowler. NKJV 6 Go to the ant, you sluggard! NKJV 10 A little sleep, a little slumber, A little folding of the hands to sleep-- NIV 10 A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest-- NKJV 11 So shall your poverty come on you like a prowler, And your need like an armed man. NIV 11 and poverty will come on you like a bandit and scarcity like an armed man. NKJV 12 A worthless person, a wicked man, Walks with a perverse mouth; NIV 12 A scoundrel and villain, who goes about with a corrupt mouth, NKJV 13 He winks with his eyes, He shuffles his feet, He points with his fingers; NIV 13 who winks with his eye, signals with his feet and motions with his fingers, NKJV 14 Perversity is in his heart, He devises evil continually, He sows discord. NIV 14 who plots evil with deceit in his heart-- he always stirs up dissension. NKJV 15 Therefore his calamity shall come suddenly; Suddenly he shall be broken without remedy. NIV 15 Therefore disaster will overtake him in an instant; he will suddenly be destroyed--without remedy. NKJV 16 These six things the Lord hates, Yes, seven are an abomination to Him: NIV 16 There are six things the LORD hates, seven that are detestable to him: NKJV 17 A proud look, A lying tongue, Hands that shed innocent blood, NIV 17 haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, NKJV 18 A heart that devises wicked plans, Feet that are swift in running to evil, NIV 18 a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are quick to rush into evil, NKJV 19 A false witness who speaks lies, And one who sows discord among brethren. NIV 19 a false witness who pours out lies and a man who stirs up dissension among brothers. NKJV 20 My son, keep your father's command, And do not forsake the law of your mother. NIV 20 My son, keep your father's commands and do not forsake your mother's teaching. NKJV 21 Bind them continually upon your heart; Tie them around your neck. NIV 21 Bind them upon your heart forever; fasten them around your neck. NKJV 22 When you roam, they will lead you; When you sleep, they will keep you; And when you awake, they will speak with you. NIV 22 When you walk, they will guide you; when you sleep, they will watch over you; when you awake, they will speak to you. NKJV 23 For the commandment is a lamp, And the law a light; Reproofs of instruction are the way of life, NIV 23 For these commands are a lamp, this teaching is a light, and the corrections of discipline are the way to life, NKJV 24 To keep you from the evil woman, From the flattering tongue of a seductress. NIV 24 keeping you from the immoral woman, from the smooth tongue of the wayward wife. NKJV 25 Do not lust after her beauty in your heart, Nor let her allure you with her eyelids. NIV 25 Do not lust in your heart after her beauty or let her captivate you with her eyes, NKJV 26 For by means of a harlot A man is reduced to a crust of bread; And an adulteress will prey upon his precious life. NIV 26 for the prostitute reduces you to a loaf of bread, and the adulteress preys upon your very life. NKJV 27 Can a man take fire to his bosom, And his clothes not be burned? NIV 27 Can a man scoop fire into his lap without his clothes being burned? NKJV 28 Can one walk on hot coals, And his feet not be seared? NIV 28 Can a man walk on hot coals without his feet being scorched? NKJV 29 So is he who goes in to his neighbor's wife; Whoever touches her shall not be innocent. NIV 29 So is he who sleeps with another man's wife; no one who touches her will go unpunished. NKJV 30 People do not despise a thief If he steals to satisfy himself when he is starving. NIV 30 Men do not despise a thief if he steals to satisfy his hunger when he is starving. NKJV 31 Yet when he is found, he must restore sevenfold; He may have to give up all the substance of his house. NIV 31 Yet if he is caught, he must pay sevenfold, though it costs him all the wealth of his house. NKJV 32 Whoever commits adultery with a woman lacks understanding; He who does so destroys his own soul. NIV 32 But a man who commits adultery lacks judgment; whoever does so destroys himself. NKJV 33 Wounds and dishonor he will get, And his reproach will not be wiped away. NIV 33 Blows and disgrace are his lot, and his shame will never be wiped away; NKJV 34 For jealousy is a husband's fury; Therefore he will not spare in the day of vengeance. NIV 34 for jealousy arouses a husband's fury, and he will show no mercy when he takes revenge. NKJV 35 He will accept no recompense, Nor will he be appeased though you give many gifts. NIV 35 He will not accept any compensation; he will refuse the bribe, however great it is.
