Psalm 109

DBY 1 {To the chief Musician. Of David. A Psalm.} O God of my praise, be not silent: NIV 1 O God, whom I praise, do not remain silent, DBY 2 For the mouth of the wicked [man] and the mouth of deceit are opened against me: they have spoken against me with a lying tongue, NIV 2 for wicked and deceitful men have opened their mouths against me; they have spoken against me with lying tongues. DBY 3 And with words of hatred have they encompassed me; and they fight against me without a cause. NIV 3 With words of hatred they surround me; they attack me without cause. DBY 4 For my love they are mine adversaries; but I [give myself unto] prayer. NIV 4 In return for my friendship they accuse me, but I am a man of prayer. DBY 5 And they have rewarded me evil for good, and hatred for my love. NIV 5 They repay me evil for good, and hatred for my friendship. DBY 6 Set a wicked [man] over him, and let [the] adversary stand at his right hand; NIV 6 Appoint an evil man to oppose him; let an accuser stand at his right hand. DBY 7 When he shall be judged, let him go out guilty, and let his prayer become sin; NIV 7 When he is tried, let him be found guilty, and may his prayers condemn him. DBY 8 Let his days be few, let another take his office; NIV 8 May his days be few; may another take his place of leadership. DBY 9 Let his sons be fatherless, and his wife a widow; NIV 9 May his children be fatherless and his wife a widow. DBY 10 Let his sons be vagabonds and beg, and let them seek [their bread] far from their desolate places; NIV 10 May his children be wandering beggars; may they be driven from their ruined homes. DBY 11 Let the usurer cast the net over all that he hath, and let strangers despoil his labour; NIV 11 May a creditor seize all he has; may strangers plunder the fruits of his labor. DBY 12 Let there be none to extend kindness unto him, neither let there be any to favour his fatherless children; NIV 12 May no one extend kindness to him or take pity on his fatherless children. DBY 13 Let his posterity be cut off; in the generation following let their name be blotted out: NIV 13 May his descendants be cut off, their names blotted out from the next generation. DBY 14 Let the iniquity of his fathers be remembered with Jehovah, and let not the sin of his mother be blotted out; NIV 14 May the iniquity of his fathers be remembered before the LORD; may the sin of his mother never be blotted out. DBY 15 Let them be before Jehovah continually, that he may cut off the memory of them from the earth: NIV 15 May their sins always remain before the LORD, that he may cut off the memory of them from the earth. DBY 16 Because he remembered not to shew kindness, but persecuted the afflicted and needy man, and the broken in heart, to slay him. NIV 16 For he never thought of doing a kindness, but hounded to death the poor and the needy and the brokenhearted. DBY 17 And he loved cursing; so let it come unto him. And he delighted not in blessing; and let it be far from him. NIV 17 He loved to pronounce a curse-- may it come on him; he found no pleasure in blessing-- may it be far from him. DBY 18 And he clothed himself with cursing like his vestment; so let it come into his bowels like water, and like oil into his bones; NIV 18 He wore cursing as his garment; it entered into his body like water, into his bones like oil. DBY 19 Let it be unto him as a garment with which he covereth himself, and for a girdle wherewith he is constantly girded. NIV 19 May it be like a cloak wrapped about him, like a belt tied forever around him. DBY 20 Let this be the reward of mine adversaries from Jehovah, and of them that speak evil against my soul. NIV 20 May this be the LORD's payment to my accusers, to those who speak evil of me. DBY 21 But do *thou* for me, Jehovah, Lord, for thy name's sake; because thy loving-kindness is good, deliver me: NIV 21 But you, O Sovereign LORD, deal well with me for your name's sake; out of the goodness of your love, deliver me. DBY 22 For I am afflicted and needy, and my heart is wounded within me. NIV 22 For I am poor and needy, and my heart is wounded within me. DBY 23 I am gone like a shadow when it lengtheneth; I am tossed about like the locust; NIV 23 I fade away like an evening shadow; I am shaken off like a locust. DBY 24 My knees are failing through fasting, and my flesh hath lost its fatness; NIV 24 My knees give way from fasting; my body is thin and gaunt. DBY 25 And I am become a reproach unto them; [when] they look upon me they shake their heads. NIV 25 I am an object of scorn to my accusers; when they see me, they shake their heads. DBY 26 Help me, Jehovah my God; save me according to thy loving-kindness: NIV 26 Help me, O LORD my God; save me in accordance with your love. DBY 27 That they may know that this is thy hand; that *thou*, Jehovah, hast done it. NIV 27 Let them know that it is your hand, that you, O LORD, have done it. DBY 28 Let *them* curse, but bless *thou*; when they rise up, let them be ashamed, and let thy servant rejoice. NIV 28 They may curse, but you will bless; when they attack they will be put to shame, but your servant will rejoice. DBY 29 Let mine adversaries be clothed with confusion, and let them cover themselves with their shame as with a mantle. NIV 29 My accusers will be clothed with disgrace and wrapped in shame as in a cloak. DBY 30 I will greatly celebrate Jehovah with my mouth; yea, I will praise him among the multitude. NIV 30 With my mouth I will greatly extol the LORD; in the great throng I will praise him. DBY 31 For he standeth at the right hand of the needy, to save him from those that judge his soul. NIV 31 For he stands at the right hand of the needy one, to save his life from those who condemn him.
