Psalm 40

WBT 1 To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David. I waited patiently for the LORD; and he inclined to me, and heard my cry. NIV 1 I waited patiently for the LORD; he turned to me and heard my cry. WBT 2 He brought me up also out of a horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, [and] established my goings. NIV 2 He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand. WBT 3 And he hath put a new song in my mouth, [even] praise to our God: many shall see [it], and fear, and shall trust in the LORD. NIV 3 He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear and put their trust in the LORD. WBT 4 Blessed [is] that man that maketh the LORD his trust, and respecteth not the proud, nor such as turn aside to lies. NIV 4 Blessed is the man who makes the LORD his trust, who does not look to the proud, to those who turn aside to false gods. WBT 5 Many, O LORD, my God, [are] thy wonderful works [which] thou hast done, and thy thoughts [which are] toward us, they cannot be reckoned up in order to thee: [if] I would declare and speak [of them], they are more than can be numbered. NIV 5 Many, O LORD my God, are the wonders you have done. The things you planned for us no one can recount to you; were I to speak and tell of them, they would be too many to declare. WBT 6 Sacrifice and offering thou didst not desire; my ears hast thou opened: burnt-offering and sin-offering hast thou not required. NIV 6 Sacrifice and offering you did not desire, but my ears you have pierced; burnt offerings and sin offerings you did not require. WBT 7 Then said I, Lo, I come: in the volume of the book [it is] written of me, NIV 7 Then I said, "Here I am, I have come-- it is written about me in the scroll. WBT 8 I delight to do thy will, O my God: yea, thy law [is] within my heart. NIV 8 I desire to do your will, O my God; your law is within my heart." WBT 9 I have preached righteousness in the great congregation: lo, I have not refrained my lips, O LORD, thou knowest. NIV 9 I proclaim righteousness in the great assembly; I do not seal my lips, as you know, O LORD. WBT 10 I have not hid thy righteousness within my heart; I have declared thy faithfulness and thy salvation: I have not concealed thy loving-kindness and thy truth from the great congregation. NIV 10 I do not hide your righteousness in my heart; I speak of your faithfulness and salvation. I do not conceal your love and your truth from the great assembly. WBT 11 Withhold not thou thy tender mercies from me, O LORD: let thy loving-kindness and thy truth continually preserve me. NIV 11 Do not withhold your mercy from me, O LORD; may your love and your truth always protect me. WBT 12 For innumerable evils have encompassed me: my iniquities have taken hold upon me, so that I am not able to look up; they are more than the hairs of my head: therefore my heart faileth me. NIV 12 For troubles without number surround me; my sins have overtaken me, and I cannot see. They are more than the hairs of my head, and my heart fails within me. WBT 13 Be pleased, O LORD, to deliver me: O LORD, make haste to help me. NIV 13 Be pleased, O LORD, to save me; O LORD, come quickly to help me. WBT 14 Let them be ashamed and confounded together that seek after my soul to destroy it; let them be driven backward and put to shame that wish me evil. NIV 14 May all who seek to take my life be put to shame and confusion; may all who desire my ruin be turned back in disgrace. WBT 15 Let them be desolate for a reward of their shame that say to me, Aha, aha. NIV 15 May those who say to me, "Aha! Aha!" be appalled at their own shame. WBT 16 Let all those that seek thee rejoice and be glad in thee: let such as love thy salvation say continually, The LORD be magnified. NIV 16 But may all who seek you rejoice and be glad in you; may those who love your salvation always say, "The LORD be exalted!" WBT 17 But I [am] poor and needy; [yet] the Lord thinketh upon me: thou [art] my help and my deliverer; make no delay, O my God. NIV 17 Yet I am poor and needy; may the Lord think of me. You are my help and my deliverer; O my God, do not delay.
