Psalm 73

CSB 1 God is indeed good to Israel, to the pure in heart. NIV 1 Surely God is good to Israel, to those who are pure in heart. CSB 2 But as for me, my feet almost slipped; my steps nearly went astray. NIV 2 But as for me, my feet had almost slipped; I had nearly lost my foothold. CSB 3 For I envied the arrogant; I saw the prosperity of the wicked. NIV 3 For I envied the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked. CSB 4 They have an easy time until they die, and their bodies are well-fed. NIV 4 They have no struggles; their bodies are healthy and strong. CSB 5 They are not in trouble like others; they are not afflicted like most people. NIV 5 They are free from the burdens common to man; they are not plagued by human ills. CSB 6 Therefore, pride is their necklace, and violence covers them like a garment. NIV 6 Therefore pride is their necklace; they clothe themselves with violence. CSB 7 Their eyes bulge out from fatness; the imaginations of their hearts run wild. NIV 7 From their callous hearts comes iniquity; the evil conceits of their minds know no limits. CSB 8 They mock, and they speak maliciously; they arrogantly threaten oppression. NIV 8 They scoff, and speak with malice; in their arrogance they threaten oppression. CSB 9 They set their mouths against heaven, and their tongues strut across the earth. NIV 9 Their mouths lay claim to heaven, and their tongues take possession of the earth. CSB 10 Therefore His people turn to them and drink in their overflowing waters. NIV 10 Therefore their people turn to them and drink up waters in abundance. CSB 11 They say, "How can God know? Does the Most High know everything?" NIV 11 They say, "How can God know? Does the Most High have knowledge?" CSB 12 Look at them-the wicked! They are always at ease, and they increase their wealth. NIV 12 This is what the wicked are like-- always carefree, they increase in wealth. CSB 13 Did I purify my heart and wash my hands in innocence for nothing? NIV 13 Surely in vain have I kept my heart pure; in vain have I washed my hands in innocence. CSB 14 For I am afflicted all day long, and punished every morning. NIV 14 All day long I have been plagued; I have been punished every morning. CSB 15 If I had decided to say these things [aloud], I would have betrayed Your people. NIV 15 If I had said, "I will speak thus," I would have betrayed your children. CSB 16 When I tried to understand all this, it seemed hopeless NIV 16 When I tried to understand all this, it was oppressive to me CSB 17 until I entered God's sanctuary. Then I understood their destiny. NIV 17 till I entered the sanctuary of God; then I understood their final destiny. CSB 18 Indeed You put them in slippery places; You make them fall into ruin. NIV 18 Surely you place them on slippery ground; you cast them down to ruin. CSB 19 How suddenly they become a desolation! They come to an end, swept away by terrors. NIV 19 How suddenly are they destroyed, completely swept away by terrors! CSB 20 Like one waking from a dream, Lord, when arising, You will despise their image. NIV 20 As a dream when one awakes, so when you arise, O Lord, you will despise them as fantasies. CSB 21 When I became embittered and my innermost being was wounded, NIV 21 When my heart was grieved and my spirit embittered, CSB 22 I was a fool and didn't understand; I was an unthinking animal toward You. NIV 22 I was senseless and ignorant; I was a brute beast before you. CSB 23 Yet I am always with You; You hold my right hand. NIV 23 Yet I am always with you; you hold me by my right hand. CSB 24 You guide me with Your counsel, and afterwards You will take me up in glory. NIV 24 You guide me with your counsel, and afterward you will take me into glory. CSB 25 Whom do I have in heaven but You? And I desire nothing on earth but You. NIV 25 Whom have I in heaven but you? And earth has nothing I desire besides you. CSB 26 My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart, my portion forever. NIV 26 My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. CSB 27 Those far from You will certainly perish; You destroy all who are unfaithful to You. NIV 27 Those who are far from you will perish; you destroy all who are unfaithful to you. CSB 28 But as for me, God's presence is my good. I have made the Lord God my refuge, so I can tell about all You do. NIV 28 But as for me, it is good to be near God. I have made the Sovereign LORD my refuge; I will tell of all your deeds.
