Psalm 94

RSV 1 O LORD, thou God of vengeance, thou God of vengeance, shine forth! NIV 1 O LORD, the God who avenges, O God who avenges, shine forth. RSV 2 Rise up, O judge of the earth; render to the proud their deserts! NIV 2 Rise up, O Judge of the earth; pay back to the proud what they deserve. RSV 3 O LORD, how long shall the wicked, how long shall the wicked exult? NIV 3 How long will the wicked, O LORD, how long will the wicked be jubilant? RSV 4 They pour out their arrogant words, they boast, all the evildoers. NIV 4 They pour out arrogant words; all the evildoers are full of boasting. RSV 5 They crush thy people, O LORD, and afflict thy heritage. NIV 5 They crush your people, O LORD; they oppress your inheritance. RSV 6 They slay the widow and the sojourner, and murder the fatherless; NIV 6 They slay the widow and the alien; they murder the fatherless. RSV 7 and they say, "The LORD does not see; the God of Jacob does not perceive." NIV 7 They say, "The LORD does not see; the God of Jacob pays no heed." RSV 8 Understand, O dullest of the people! Fools, when will you be wise? NIV 8 Take heed, you senseless ones among the people; you fools, when will you become wise? RSV 9 He who planted the ear, does he not hear? He who formed the eye, does he not see? NIV 9 Does he who implanted the ear not hear? Does he who formed the eye not see? RSV 10 He who chastens the nations, does he not chastise? He who teaches men knowledge, NIV 10 Does he who disciplines nations not punish? Does he who teaches man lack knowledge? RSV 11 the LORD, knows the thoughts of man, that they are but a breath. NIV 11 The LORD knows the thoughts of man; he knows that they are futile. RSV 12 Blessed is the man whom thou dost chasten, O LORD, and whom thou dost teach out of thy law NIV 12 Blessed is the man you discipline, O LORD, the man you teach from your law; RSV 13 to give him respite from days of trouble, until a pit is dug for the wicked. NIV 13 you grant him relief from days of trouble, till a pit is dug for the wicked. RSV 14 For the LORD will not forsake his people; he will not abandon his heritage; NIV 14 For the LORD will not reject his people; he will never forsake his inheritance. RSV 15 for justice will return to the righteous, and all the upright in heart will follow it. NIV 15 Judgment will again be founded on righteousness, and all the upright in heart will follow it. RSV 16 Who rises up for me against the wicked? Who stands up for me against evildoers? NIV 16 Who will rise up for me against the wicked? Who will take a stand for me against evildoers? RSV 17 If the LORD had not been my help, my soul would soon have dwelt in the land of silence. NIV 17 Unless the LORD had given me help, I would soon have dwelt in the silence of death. RSV 18 When I thought, "My foot slips," thy steadfast love, O LORD, held me up. NIV 18 When I said, "My foot is slipping," your love, O LORD, supported me. RSV 19 When the cares of my heart are many, thy consolations cheer my soul. NIV 19 When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought joy to my soul. RSV 20 Can wicked rulers be allied with thee, who frame mischief by statute? NIV 20 Can a corrupt throne be allied with you-- one that brings on misery by its decrees? RSV 21 They band together against the life of the righteous, and condemn the innocent to death. NIV 21 They band together against the righteous and condemn the innocent to death. RSV 22 But the LORD has become my stronghold, and my God the rock of my refuge. NIV 22 But the LORD has become my fortress, and my God the rock in whom I take refuge. RSV 23 He will bring back on them their iniquity and wipe them out for their wickedness; the LORD our God will wipe them out. NIV 23 He will repay them for their sins and destroy them for their wickedness; the LORD our God will destroy them.
