MSG 1 I saw Heaven and earth new-created. Gone the first Heaven, gone the first earth, gone the sea. NIV 1 Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. MSG 2 I saw Holy Jerusalem, new-created, descending resplendent out of Heaven, as ready for God as a bride for her husband. NIV 2 I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. MSG 3 I heard a voice thunder from the Throne: "Look! Look! God has moved into the neighborhood, making his home with men and women! They're his people, he's their God. NIV 3 And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, "Now the dwelling of God is with men, and he will live with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. MSG 4 He'll wipe every tear from their eyes. Death is gone for good - tears gone, crying gone, pain gone - all the first order of things gone." NIV 4 He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away." MSG 5 The Enthroned continued, "Look! I'm making everything new. Write it all down - each word dependable and accurate." NIV 5 He who was seated on the throne said, "I am making everything new!" Then he said, "Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true." MSG 6 Then he said, "It's happened. I'm A to Z. I'm the Beginning, I'm the Conclusion. From Water-of-Life Well I give freely to the thirsty. NIV 6 He said to me: "It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To him who is thirsty I will give to drink without cost from the spring of the water of life. MSG 7 Conquerors inherit all this. I'll be God to them, they'll be sons and daughters to me. NIV 7 He who overcomes will inherit all this, and I will be his God and he will be my son. MSG 8 But for the rest - the feckless and faithless, degenerates and murderers, sex peddlers and sorcerers, idolaters and all liars - for them it's Lake Fire and Brimstone. Second death!" NIV 8 But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars--their place will be in the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death." MSG 9 One of the Seven Angels who had carried the bowls filled with the seven final disasters spoke to me: "Come here. I'll show you the Bride, the Wife of the Lamb." NIV 9 One of the seven angels who had the seven bowls full of the seven last plagues came and said to me, "Come, I will show you the bride, the wife of the Lamb." MSG 10 He took me away in the Spirit to an enormous, high mountain and showed me Holy Jerusalem descending out of Heaven from God, NIV 10 And he carried me away in the Spirit to a mountain great and high, and showed me the Holy City, Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God. MSG 11 resplendent in the bright glory of God. NIV 11 It shone with the glory of God, and its brilliance was like that of a very precious jewel, like a jasper, clear as crystal. MSG 12 She had a wall majestic and high with twelve gates. At each gate stood an Angel, and on the gates were inscribed the names of the Twelve Tribes of the sons of Israel: NIV 12 It had a great, high wall with twelve gates, and with twelve angels at the gates. On the gates were written the names of the twelve tribes of Israel. MSG 13 three gates on the east, three gates on the north, three gates on the south, three gates on the west. MSG 14 The wall was set on twelve foundations, the names of the Twelve Apostles of the Lamb inscribed on them. MSG 15 The Angel speaking with me had a gold measuring stick to measure the City, its gates, and its wall. NIV 15 The angel who talked with me had a measuring rod of gold to measure the city, its gates and its walls. MSG 16 The City was laid out in a perfect square. He measured the City with the measuring stick: twelve thousand stadia, its length, width, and height all equal. NIV 16 The city was laid out like a square, as long as it was wide. He measured the city with the rod and found it to be 12,000 stadia in length, and as wide and high as it is long. MSG 17 Using the standard measure, the Angel measured the thickness of its wall: 144 cubits. NIV 17 He measured its wall and it was 144 cubits thick, by man's measurement, which the angel was using. MSG 18 The wall was jasper, the color of Glory, and the City was pure gold, translucent as glass. NIV 18 The wall was made of jasper, and the city of pure gold, as pure as glass. MSG 19 The foundations of the City walls were garnished with every precious gem imaginable: the first foundation jasper, the second sapphire, the third agate, the fourth emerald, NIV 19 The foundations of the city walls were decorated with every kind of precious stone. The first foundation was jasper, the second sapphire, the third chalcedony, the fourth emerald, MSG 20 the fifth onyx, the sixth carnelian, the seventh chrysolite, the eighth beryl, the ninth topaz, the tenth chrysoprase, the eleventh jacinth, the twelfth amethyst. The great street of the city was of pure gold, like transparent glass. MSG 22 But there was no sign of a Temple, for the Lord God - the Sovereign-Strong - and the Lamb are the Temple. NIV 22 I did not see a temple in the city, because the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple. MSG 23 The City doesn't need sun or moon for light. God's Glory is its light, the Lamb its lamp! NIV 23 The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb is its lamp. MSG 24 The nations will walk in its light and earth's kings bring in their splendor. NIV 24 The nations will walk by its light, and the kings of the earth will bring their splendor into it. MSG 25 Its gates will never be shut by day, and there won't be any night. NIV 25 On no day will its gates ever be shut, for there will be no night there. MSG 26 They'll bring the glory and honor of the nations into the City. NIV 26 The glory and honor of the nations will be brought into it. MSG 27 Nothing dirty or defiled will get into the City, and no one who defiles or deceives. Only those whose names are written in the Lamb's Book of Life will get in. NIV 27 Nothing impure will ever enter it, nor will anyone who does what is shameful or deceitful, but only those whose names are written in the Lamb's book of life.
