Song of Solomon 8

CJB

NIV

1 I wish you were my brother, who nursed at my mother's breast; then, if I met you outdoors, I could kiss you, and no one would look down on me.
1 If only you were to me like a brother, who was nursed at my mother’s breasts! Then, if I found you outside, I would kiss you, and no one would despise me.
2 I would lead you and bring you to my mother's house, and she would instruct me. I would give you spiced wine to drink, fresh juice from my pomegranates.
2 I would lead you and bring you to my mother’s house— she who has taught me. I would give you spiced wine to drink, the nectar of my pomegranates.
3 His left arm would be under my head and his right arm around me.
3 His left arm is under my head and his right arm embraces me.
4 I warn you, daughters of Yerushalayim, not to awaken or stir up love until it wants to arise!
4 Daughters of Jerusalem, I charge you: Do not arouse or awaken love until it so desires.
5 [Chorus] Who is this, coming up from the desert, leaning on her darling? [He] I awakened you under the apple tree. It was there that your mother conceived you; there she who bore you conceived you.
5 Who is this coming up from the wilderness leaning on her beloved? Under the apple tree I roused you; there your mother conceived you, there she who was in labor gave you birth.
6 [She] Set me like a seal on your heart, like a seal on your arm; for love is as strong as death, passion as cruel as Sh'ol; its flashes are flashes of fire, [as fierce as the] flame of Yah.
6 Place me like a seal over your heart, like a seal on your arm; for love is as strong as death, its jealousy unyielding as the grave. It burns like blazing fire, like a mighty flame.
7 No amount of water can quench love, torrents cannot drown it. If someone gave all the wealth in his house for love, he would gain only utter contempt.
7 Many waters cannot quench love; rivers cannot sweep it away. If one were to give all the wealth of one’s house for love, it would be utterly scorned.
8 [Chorus] We have a little sister; her breasts are still unformed. What are we to do with our sister when she is asked for in marriage?
8 We have a little sister, and her breasts are not yet grown. What shall we do for our sister on the day she is spoken for?
9 If she is a wall, we will build on her a palace of silver; and if she is a door, we will enclose her with panels of cedar.
9 If she is a wall, we will build towers of silver on her. If she is a door, we will enclose her with panels of cedar.
10 [She] I am a wall, and my breasts are like towers; so in his view I am like one who brings peace.
10 I am a wall, and my breasts are like towers. Thus I have become in his eyes like one bringing contentment.
11 Shlomo had a vineyard at Ba'al-Hamon, and he gave the vineyard to caretakers; each of them would pay for its fruit a thousand pieces of silver.
11 Solomon had a vineyard in Baal Hamon; he let out his vineyard to tenants. Each was to bring for its fruit a thousand shekels of silver.
12 My vineyard is mine; I tend it, myself. You can have the thousand, Shlomo, and the fruit-caretakers, two hundred!
12 But my own vineyard is mine to give; the thousand shekels are for you, Solomon, and two hundred are for those who tend its fruit.
13 [He] You who live in the garden, friends are listening for your voice. Let me hear it!
13 You who dwell in the gardens with friends in attendance, let me hear your voice!
14 [She] - Flee, my darling! Be like a gazelle or young stag on the mountains of spices!
14 Come away, my beloved, and be like a gazelle or like a young stag on the spice-laden mountains.
