After they had hoisted it up, they usedsupportingcables in undergirding the ship; and fearing that they might 1runaground on the shallows of Syrtis, they letdown the seaanchor and in thisway let themselves be driven along.

The next day as we were being violentlystorm-tossed, they began to 2jettison the cargo;

and on the third day they threw the ship'stackle overboard with their ownhands.

Since neithersunnorstarsappeared for manydays, and nosmallstorm was assailing us, from then on allhope of our being saved was gradually abandoned.

When they had gone a longtimewithoutfood, thenPaulstood up in their midst and said, "3Men, you ought to have followed my advice and not to have setsail from 4Crete and incurredthis5damage and loss.

"Yet now I urge you to 6keep up your courage, for there will be noloss of lifeamong you, but only of the ship.

"For this very night7an angel of the God to whom I belong and 8whom I serve9stoodbefore me,

saying, 'Do not be afraid, Paul; 10you muststandbeforeCaesar; and behold, God has granted you 11allthose who are sailing with you.'

"Therefore, 12keep up your courage, men, for I believeGod that it will turn out exactly** as I have been told.
