15SoJesus, perceiving that they were intending to come and take Him by force1to make Him king, 2withdrewagain to 3the mountain by Himselfalone.
16
Nowwheneveningcame, His 4discipleswentdown to the sea,
17
and after getting into a boat, they started to cross the sea5to Capernaum. It had alreadybecomedark, and Jesus had not yetcome to them.
18
The sea began to be stirred up because a strongwind was blowing.
19
Then, when they had rowedaboutthree*or four miles, they sawJesuswalking on the sea and drawingnear to the boat; and they were frightened.
20
But He said to them, "It is I; 6do not be afraid."
21
So they were willing to receive Him into the boat, and immediately the boat was at the land to which they were going.
22
The nextday7the crowd that stood on the otherside of the seasaw that there was noothersmallboatthere, exceptone, and that Jesus8had not entered with His disciples into the boat, but that His disciples had goneawayalone.
23
There cameothersmallboats from 9Tiberiasnear to the placewhere they ate the bread after the 10Lord11had giventhanks.
24
Sowhen the crowdsaw that Jesus was not there, nor His disciples, they themselvesgot into the smallboats, and 12came to CapernaumseekingJesus.
25
When they found Him on the otherside of the sea, they said to Him, "13Rabbi, when did You gethere?"
Words to the People
26Jesusanswered them and said, "Truly, truly, I say to you, you 14seek Me, not because you saw15signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled.
27
"Do not 16work for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to 17eternallife, which18the Son of Man will give to you, for on Him the Father, God, 19has set His seal."
28
Therefore they said to Him, "What shall we do, so that we may work the works of God?"
29
Jesusanswered and said to them, "This is 20the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He 21has sent."
30
So they said to Him, "22Whatthen do You do for a 23sign, so that we may see, and believe You? Whatwork do You perform?
31
"24Our fathersate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, '25HE GAVE THEM BREAD OUT OF HEAVEN TO EAT.' "
32
Jesusthensaid to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread out of heaven, but it is My Father who gives you the truebread out of heaven.
33
"For the bread of God is that which 26comesdown out of heaven, and giveslife to the world."
34
Then they said to Him, "Lord, always27give us thisbread."
35
Jesussaid to them, "28I am the bread of life; he who comes to Me will not hunger, and he who believes in Me 29will never*thirst.
36
"But 30I said to you that you have seen Me, and yet do not believe.
37
"31All that the Fathergives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will certainly* not cast out.
38
"For 32I have comedown from heaven, 33not to do My ownwill, but 34the will of Him who 35sent Me.
39
"This is the will of Him who sent Me, that of 36all that He has given Me I 37losenothing, but 38raise it up on the lastday.
40
"For this is the will of My Father, that everyone who 39beholds the Son and 40believes in Him will haveeternallife, and I Myself will 41raise him up on the lastday."
Words to the Jews
4142Therefore the Jews were grumblingabout Him, because He said, "I am the bread that 43camedown out of heaven."
42
They were saying, "44Is not thisJesus, the son of Joseph, whosefather and mother45we know? How does He nowsay, '46I have comedown out of heaven '?"
43
Jesusanswered and said to them, "Do not grumbleamongyourselves.
44
"Noonecancome to Me unless* the Father who sent Me 47draws him; and I will 48raise him up on the lastday.
45
"It is written49in the prophets, '50AND THEY SHALL ALL BE 51TAUGHT OF GOD.' Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father, comes to Me.
46
"52Not that anyone has seen the Father, except the One who is from God; He has seen the Father.
47
"Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes53haseternallife.
49
"55Your fathersate the manna in the wilderness, and they died.
50
"This is the bread which 56comesdown out of heaven, so that one may eat of it and 57not die.
51
"58I am the livingbread that 59camedown out of heaven; ifanyoneeats of thisbread, 60he will liveforever; and the breadalsowhich I will give61for the life of the world is 62My flesh."
52
63Then the Jews64began to argue with oneanother, saying, "Howcanthismangive us His flesh to eat?"
53
SoJesussaid to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless* you eat the flesh of 65the Son of Man and drink His blood, you havenolife in yourselves.
54
"He who eats My flesh and drinks My bloodhaseternallife, and I will 66raise him up on the lastday.
55
"For My flesh is truefood, and My blood is truedrink.
56
"He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood67abides in Me, and I in him.
57
"As the 68livingFather69sent Me, and I livebecause of the Father, so he who eats Me, he also will livebecause of Me.
58
"This is the breadwhich70camedown out of heaven; not as 71the fathersate and died; he who eatsthisbread72will liveforever."
Words to the Disciples
59Thesethings He said73in the synagogue as He taught74in Capernaum.
60
Thereforemany of His 75disciples, when they heard this said, "76This is a difficultstatement; whocanlisten to it?"
61
But Jesus, 77conscious** that His disciplesgrumbled at this, said to them, "Does this78cause you to stumble?
62
"What thenif you see79the Son of Man80ascending to where He was before?
63
"81It is the Spirit who giveslife; the fleshprofitsnothing; 82the words that I have spoken to you are spirit and are life.
64
"But there are 83some of you who do not believe." For Jesus84knew from the beginningwho they were who did not believe, and 85who it was that would betray Him.
65
And He was saying, "For thisreason I have 86said to you, that noonecancome to Me unless*87it has beengranted him from the Father."
Peter's Confession of Faith
66 As a result of thismany of His 88disciples89withdrew* and were not walking with Him anymore.
67
SoJesussaid to 90the twelve, "You do not want to goawayalso, do you?"
68
91SimonPeteranswered Him, "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have92words of eternallife.
69
"We have believed and have come to know that You are 93the HolyOne of God."
70
Jesusanswered them, "94Did I Myself not choose you, 95the twelve, and yet one of you is 96a devil?"
71
Now He meantJudas97the son of SimonIscariot, for he, 98one of 99the twelve, was going to betray Him.
