17 The seventyreturned with joy, saying, "Lord, even1the demons are subject to us in Your name."

And He said to them, "I was watching2Satanfall from heavenlikelightning.

"Behold, I have given you authority to 3tread on serpents and scorpions, and overall the power of the enemy, and nothing will injure you.
20
"Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that 4your names are recorded in heaven."

5At that verytime He rejoicedgreatly in the HolySpirit, and said, "I praise You, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that You have hiddenthesethings from the wise and intelligent and have revealed them to infants. Yes, Father, for thisway was well-pleasing in Your sight.

"6Allthings have been handedover to Me by My Father, and 7nooneknowswho the Son is except the Father, and who the Father is except the Son, and anyone to whom the Sonwills to reveal Him."

8Turning to the disciples, He saidprivately*, "Blessed are the eyes which see the things you see,
24
for I say to you, that manyprophets and kingswished to see the things which you see, and did not see them, and to hear the things which you hear, and did not hear them."

9And a 10lawyerstood up and put Him to the test, saying, "Teacher, what shall I do to inheriteternallife?"

And He said to him, "What is written in the Law? How does it read to you?"
27
And he answered, "11YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR STRENGTH, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND; AND YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF."

And He said to him, "You have answeredcorrectly; 12DOTHIS AND YOU WILL LIVE."

But wishing13to justifyhimself, he said to Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?"
The Good Samaritan
30Jesusreplied and said, "A man was 14goingdown from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fellamongrobbers, and they stripped him and beat* him, and wentawayleaving him halfdead.

"And by chance a priest was goingdown on that road, and when he saw him, he passed by on the otherside.
32
"Likewise a Levitealso, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the otherside.
33
"But a 15Samaritan, who was on a journey, came upon him; and when he saw him, he feltcompassion,
34
and came to him and bandaged up his wounds, pouringoil and wine on them; and he put him on his ownbeast, and brought him to an inn and tookcare of him.
35
"On the nextday he took out twodenarii and gave them to the innkeeper and said, 'Takecare of him; and whatever**more you spend, when I return I will repay you.'
36
"Which of thesethree do you thinkproved to be a neighbor to the man who fell into the robbers' hands?"

And he said, "The one who showedmercytoward him." ThenJesussaid to him, "Go and do the same."
