11Now it happened that He was passingthrough some grainfields on a Sabbath; and His disciples2were picking the heads of grain, rubbing them in their hands, and eating the grain.

But some of the Phariseessaid, "Why do you dowhat3is not lawful on the Sabbath?"

And Jesusanswering them said, "Have you not evenread4whatDaviddidwhen he was hungry, he and those who were with him,

how he entered the house of God, and took and ate the consecratedbreadwhich5is not lawful for any to eatexcept the priestsalone, and gave it to his companions*?"

And He was saying to them, "The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath."

6On anotherSabbath He entered7the synagogue and was teaching; and there was a mantherewhose*righthand was withered.

The scribes and the Pharisees8were watching Him closely to see if He healed on the Sabbath, so that they might find reason to accuse Him.

But He 9knewwhat they were thinking, and He said to the man with the witheredhand, "Get up and comeforward*!" And he got up and came forward.

And Jesussaid to them, "I ask you, is it lawful to dogoodor to doharm on the Sabbath, to save a lifeor to destroy it?"

After 10lookingaround at them all, He said to him, "Stretch out your hand!" And he did so; and his hand was restored.

But they themselves were filled with rage, and discussedtogether*what* they might do to Jesus.
Choosing the Twelve
12 It was at thistime that He wentoff to 11the mountain to 12pray, and He spent the wholenight in prayer to God.

And whendaycame, 13He called His disciples to Him and chosetwelve of them, whom He alsonamed as 14apostles:

Simon, whom He alsonamedPeter, and Andrew his brother; and James and John; and Philip and Bartholomew;
15
and 15Matthew and Thomas; James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon who was called the Zealot;

Judas the son of James, and JudasIscariot, whobecame a traitor.

Jesus 16camedown with them and stood on a levelplace; and there was 17a largecrowd of His disciples, and a greatthrong of people from allJudea and Jerusalem and the coastalregion of 18Tyre and Sidon,

who had come to hear Him and to be healed of their diseases; and those who were troubled with uncleanspirits were being cured.

And all the people were trying to 19touch Him, for 20power was coming from Him and healing them all.
The Beatitudes
20 And turning His gazetoward His disciples, He began to say, "21Blessed are you who are poor, for 22yours is the kingdom of God.

"Blessed are you who hungernow, for you shall be satisfied. Blessed are you who weepnow, for you shall laugh.
22
"23Blessed are you whenmenhate you, and 24ostracize you, and insult you, and scorn your name as evil, for the sake of the Son of Man.

"Be glad in that day and 25leap for joy, for behold, your reward is great in heaven. For 26in the sameway their fathers used to treat the prophets.

"But woe to 27you who are rich, for 28you are receiving your comfort in full.
25
"Woe to you who are well-fednow, for you shall be hungry. Woe to you who laughnow, for you shall mourn and weep.

"Woe to you whenallmenspeakwell of you, for their fathers used to treat the 29falseprophets in the sameway.
