1One of the scribescame and heard them arguing, and 2recognizing that He had answered them well, asked Him, "Whatcommandment is the foremost of all?"

Jesusanswered, "The foremost is, '3HEAR, O ISRAEL! THE LORD OUR GOD IS ONELORD;

4AND YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND, AND WITH ALL YOUR STRENGTH.'

"The second is this, '5YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.' There is noothercommandmentgreater than these."

The scribesaid to Him, "Right, Teacher; You have truly*stated that 6HE IS ONE, AND THERE IS NOONEELSEBESIDES HIM;

7AND TO LOVE HIM WITH ALL THE HEART AND WITH ALL THE UNDERSTANDING AND WITH ALL THE STRENGTH, AND TO LOVE ONE'S NEIGHBOR AS HIMSELF, 8is muchmore than allburntofferings and sacrifices."

When Jesussaw that he had answeredintelligently, He said to him, "You are not far from the kingdom of God."9After that, noone would venture to ask Him anymorequestions.

10And Jesus began to say, as He 11taught in the temple, "How is it that the scribessay that the Christ is the 12son of David?

"Davidhimselfsaid in the HolySpirit,'13THE LORDSAID TO MY LORD,"SIT AT MY RIGHTHAND,UNTIL I PUT YOUR ENEMIESBENEATH YOUR FEET."'

"Davidhimselfcalls Him 'Lord '; so in whatsense is He his son?" And 14the largecrowdenjoyedlistening to Him.

15In His teaching He was saying: "Beware of the scribes who like to walkaround in longrobes, and like 16respectful greetings in the marketplaces,

and chiefseats in the synagogues and places of honor at banquets,

17who devourwidows'houses, and for appearance'ssakeofferlongprayers; these will receivegreatercondemnation."

4118And He satdownopposite19the treasury, and began observinghow the people were 20puttingmoney into the treasury; and manyrichpeople were putting in largesums.

A poorwidowcame and put in twosmallcoppercoins, whichamount to a cent.

Calling His disciples to Him, He said to them, "Truly I say to you, thispoorwidowput in more than all the contributors to the treasury;

for they allput in out of their surplus, but she, out of her poverty, put in all* she owned, all she had 21to live on."
