Jeremías 38:1-9

1 Y oyó Sefatías hijo de Matán, y Gedalías hijo de Pasur, y Jucal hijo de Selemías, y Pasur hijo de Malquías, las palabras que Jeremías hablaba a todo el pueblo, diciendo:

2 Así dijo el SEÑOR: El que se quedare en esta ciudad morirá a cuchillo, o de hambre, o de pestilencia; mas el que saliere a los caldeos vivirá, pues su vida le será por despojo, y vivirá.

3 Así dijo el SEÑOR: De cierto será entregada esta ciudad en mano del ejército del rey de Babilonia, y la tomará.

4 Y dijeron los príncipes al rey: Muera ahora este hombre; porque de esta manera hace desmayar las manos de los varones de guerra que han quedado en esta ciudad, y las manos de todo el pueblo, hablándoles tales palabras; porque este hombre no busca la paz de este pueblo, sino el mal.

5 Y dijo el rey Sedequías: Helo ahí, en vuestras manos está; que el rey no podrá contra vosotros nada.

6 Entonces tomaron ellos a Jeremías, y lo hicieron echar en la mazmorra de Malquías hijo de Hamelec, que estaba en el patio de la guarda; y metieron a Jeremías con sogas. Y en la mazmorra no había agua, sino cieno; y se hundió Jeremías en el cieno.

7 Y oyendo Ebed-melec, hombre etíope, eunuco que estaba en la casa del rey, que habían puesto a Jeremías en la mazmorra, y estando sentado el rey a la puerta de Benjamín,

8 Ebed-melec salió de la casa del rey, y habló al rey, diciendo:

9 Mi señor el rey, mal hicieron estos varones en todo lo que han hecho con Jeremías profeta, al cual hicieron echar en la mazmorra; porque allí se morirá de hambre, pues no hay más pan en la ciudad.

INTRODUCTION TO JEREMIAH 38

This chapter is taken up in giving an account of Jeremiah's being cast into a dungeon; his deliverance from it; and private conversation with King Zedekiah. The occasion of the prophet's being cast into a dungeon was his discourse to the people, which four of the princes represented to the king as seditious, and moved to have him put to death; and, being delivered into their hands, was put into a miry dungeon, Jer 38:1-6. Ebedmelech, the Ethiopian, hearing of his miserable case, represented it to the king, and interceded for his release; which being granted, with the help of thirty men, and by means of old clouts and rotten rags, let down by cords, drew him up, and placed him in the court of the prison, Jer 38:7-13. King Zedekiah sends for Jeremiah, and has a private conference with him about the state of affairs; when the prophet faithfully told him how things would issue, and gave him his best advice, Jer 38:14-23; upon parting, the king desires the conference might be kept a secret from the princes, which was accordingly done, Jer 38:24-27; and Jeremiah remained in the court of the prison till the taking of Jerusalem, Jer 38:28.
