Psalms 119:113-176

Samekh.

I hate those who are 1double-minded, But I love Your 2law.
You are my 3hiding place and my 4shield; I 5wait for Your word.
6Depart from me, evildoers, That I may 7observe the commandments of my God.
8Sustain me according to Your word, that I may live; And 9do not let me be ashamed of my hope.
Uphold me that I may be 10safe, That I may 11have regard for Your statutes continually.
You have rejected all those 12who wander from Your statutes, For their deceitfulness is useless.
You have removed all the wicked of the earth like 13dross; Therefore I 14love Your testimonies.
My flesh 15trembles for fear of You, And I am 16afraid of Your judgments. Ayin.

Ayin.

I have 17done justice and righteousness; Do not leave me to my oppressors.
Be 18surety for Your servant for good; Do not let the arrogant 19oppress me.
My 20eyes fail with longing for Your salvation And for Your righteous word.
Deal with Your servant 21according to Your lovingkindness And 22teach me Your statutes.
23I am Your servant; 24give me understanding, That I may know Your testimonies.
It is time for the LORD to 25act, For they have broken Your law.
Therefore * I 26love Your commandments Above gold, yes, above fine gold.
Therefore * I esteem right all Your 27precepts concerning everything, I 28hate every false way. Pe.

Your testimonies are 29wonderful; Therefore * my soul 30observes them.
The 31unfolding of Your words gives light; It gives 32understanding to the simple.
I 33opened my mouth wide and 34panted, For I 35longed for Your commandments.
36Turn to me and be gracious to me, After Your manner with those who love Your name.
Establish my 37footsteps in Your word, And do not let any iniquity 38have dominion over me.
39Redeem me from the oppression of man, That I may keep Your precepts.
40Make Your face shine upon Your servant, And 41teach me Your statutes.
My eyes shed 42streams of water, Because they 43do not keep Your law. Tsadhe.

44Righteous are You, O LORD, And upright are Your judgments.
You have commanded Your testimonies in 45righteousness And exceeding 46faithfulness.
My 47zeal has consumed me, Because my adversaries have forgotten Your words.
Your 48word is very pure, Therefore Your servant 49loves it.
I am small and 50despised, Yet I do not 51forget Your precepts.
Your righteousness is an everlasting righteousness, And 52Your law is truth.
Trouble and anguish have come upon me, Yet Your commandments are my 53delight.
Your 54testimonies are righteous forever; 55Give me understanding that I may live. Qoph.

I cried 56with all my heart; answer me, O LORD! I will 57observe Your statutes.
I cried to You; 58save me And I shall keep Your testimonies.
I 59rise before dawn and cry for help; I wait for Your words.
My eyes anticipate the 60night watches, That I may 61meditate on Your word.
Hear my voice 62according to Your lovingkindness; 63Revive me, O LORD, according to Your ordinances.
Those who follow after wickedness draw near; They are far from Your law.
You are 64near, O LORD, And all Your commandments are 65truth.
Of old I have 66known from Your testimonies That You have founded them 67forever. Resh.

68Look upon my 69affliction and rescue me, For I do not 70forget Your law.
71Plead my cause and 72redeem me; Revive me according to Your word.
Salvation is 73far from the wicked, For they 74do not seek Your statutes.
75Great are Your mercies, O LORD; Revive me according to Your ordinances.
Many are my 76persecutors and my adversaries, Yet I do not 77turn aside from Your testimonies.
I behold the 78treacherous and 79loathe them, Because they do not keep Your word.
Consider how I 80love Your precepts; 81Revive me, O LORD, according to Your lovingkindness.
The 82sum of Your word is 83truth, And every one of Your righteous ordinances 84is everlasting. Shin.

85Princes persecute me without cause, But my heart 86stands in awe of Your words.
I 87rejoice at Your word, As one who 88finds great spoil.
I 89hate and despise falsehood, But I 90love Your law.
Seven times a day I praise You, Because of Your 91righteous ordinances.
Those who love Your law have 92great peace, And 93nothing causes them to stumble.
I 94hope for Your salvation, O LORD, And do Your commandments.
My 95soul keeps Your testimonies, And I 96love them exceedingly.
I 97keep Your precepts and Your testimonies, For all my 98ways are before You. Tav.

Let my 99cry come before You, O LORD; 100Give me understanding 101according to Your word.
Let my 102supplication come before You; 103Deliver me according to Your word.
Let my 104lips utter praise, For You 105teach me Your statutes.
Let my 106tongue sing of Your word, For all Your 107commandments are righteousness.
Let Your 108hand be ready to help me, For I have 109chosen Your precepts.
I 110long for Your salvation, O LORD, And Your law is my 111delight.
Let my 112soul live that it may praise You, And let Your ordinances help me.
I have 113gone astray like a lost sheep; seek Your servant, For I do 114not forget Your commandments.

Psalms 119:113-176 Meaning and Commentary

INTRODUCTION TO PSALM 119

This psalm is generally thought to be written by David, but when is uncertain; very probably towards the decline of life; and, as some think, for the sake or his son Solomon. It seems to be a collection of observations on the word of God and its precepts, the usefulness and excellency of it, he had made in the course of his life; interspersed with various petitions for the grace of God, to enable him to observe it. The psalm is a very extraordinary one; partly on account of the unusual length of it, it being more than double the length of the longest psalm in the whole book; and partly on account of its curious composition. It consists of twenty two parts, according to the number of the letters in the Hebrew alphabet; the names of which letters stand between each part; and every part consists of eight verses, all of which begin with the same letter: thus, for instance, the first eight verses begin with the letter a, "aleph", and the second eight verses begin with the letter b, "beth", and so on throughout; hence the Masorah calls this psalm the Great Alphabet. This the psalmist did, perhaps to excite attention to what he said, and also to help the memory. And it is observable that there are very few verses in the whole, not more than one or two, but what has something in it concerning the word of God, and its precepts and ordinances; there are nine or ten different words used relative to it, which signify much one and the same thing; as laws, statutes, judgments, testimonies Luther {m} observes, that neither Cicero, nor Virgil, nor Demosthenes, are to be compared with David for eloquence, as we see in the hundred nineteenth Psalm, where he divideth one sense and meaning into twenty two sorts. And it may also be remarked, that there is nothing in it concerning the tabernacle worship, or the rites and ceremonies of the legal dispensation; so that it seems to be calculated for, and is suited to, the word of God, and the ordinances of it, as we now have them in their full perfection: and the design of the whole is to show the fervent affection the psalmist had for the word of God, and to stir up the same in others.
