Psalm 49:1-8

1 Dem Vorsänger. Von den Söhnen Korahs, ein Psalm. Höret dies, ihr Völker alle; nehmet es zu Ohren, alle Bewohner der Welt;

2 sowohl Menschensöhne als Männersöhne, Reiche und Arme allzumal!

3 Mein Mund soll Weisheit reden, und das Sinnen meines Herzens soll Einsicht sein.

4 Neigen will ich zu einem Spruche mein Ohr, mein Rätsel eröffnen bei der Laute.

5 Warum sollte ich mich fürchten in Tagen des Übels, wenn die Ungerechtigkeit derer, die mir auf der Ferse sind, mich umringt.

6 Welche auf ihr Vermögen vertrauen und der Größe ihres Reichtums sich rühmen?

7 Keineswegs vermag jemand seinen Bruder zu erlösen, nicht kann er Gott sein Lösegeld geben,

8 (Denn kostbar ist die Erlösung ihrer Seele, und er muß davon abstehen auf ewig)

Psalm 49:1-8 Meaning and Commentary

To the chief Musician, A Psalm for the sons of Korah. Aben Ezra says this psalm is a very excellent one, since in it is explained the Light of the world to come, and of the rational and immortal soul; and Kimchi is of opinion that it respects both this world and that which is to come: and indeed it treats of the vanity of trusting in riches: of the insufficiency of them for the redemption of the soul; of the short continuance of worldly honour and substance; of the certainty of death, and of the resurrection of the dead. And the design of it is to expose the folly of trusting in uncertain riches, and to comfort the people of God under the want of them.
