Sofonías 3:1-10

1 Rebelión y redención de Jerusalén
¡Qué aflicción le espera a la rebelde y contaminada Jerusalén,
la ciudad de violencia y crimen!

2 Nadie puede decirle nada;
rechaza toda corrección.
No confía en el Señor
ni se acerca a su Dios.

3 Sus líderes son como leones rugientes
en cacería de sus víctimas.
Sus jueces son como lobos voraces al anochecer,
que para la mañana no han dejado rastro de su presa.

4 Sus profetas son mentirosos y arrogantes, en busca de su propia ganancia.
Sus sacerdotes profanan el templo al desobedecer las instrucciones de Dios.

5 Pero el Señor
todavía está en la ciudad,
y él no hace nada malo.
Día tras día emite justicia,
él nunca falla.
Pero los perversos no conocen la vergüenza.

6 «Yo he aniquilado a muchas naciones
y he devastado las murallas y torres de sus fortalezas.
Las calles ahora están desiertas;
sus ciudades quedan en ruinas silenciosas.
No quedó nadie con vida,
ni siquiera uno.

7 Yo pensé: “¡Seguramente ahora me temerán!
Sin duda, escucharán mis advertencias.
Entonces no necesitaré intervenir otra vez
y destruir sus casas”.
¡Pero no es así! Se levantan temprano
para continuar con sus malas acciones.

8 Por lo tanto, tengan paciencia —dice el Señor
—.
Pronto me levantaré y acusaré a esas naciones malvadas.
Pues he decidido reunir a los reinos de la tierra
y descargar mi más feroz ira y furia sobre ellos.
Toda la tierra será consumida
por el fuego de mi celo.

9 »Entonces purificaré el lenguaje de todos los pueblos,
para que todos juntos puedan adorar al Señor
.

10 Mi pueblo disperso, que vive más allá de los ríos de Etiopía
vendrá a presentar sus ofrendas.

Sofonías 3:1-10 Meaning and Commentary

INTRODUCTION TO ZEPHANIAH 3

In this chapter the character of the city of Jerusalem, and its inhabitants in general, is drawn, as it would be, and as it was, in the times of Christ and his apostles, Zep 3:1,2 and of the principal persons of it in particular, its princes, judges, prophets, and priests, Zep 3:3,4. The hardness, impenitence, and shamelessness of this people, are exposed and aggravated by the just Lord being among them; who, by his example and doctrine, taught them otherwise; yet they were not amended or made ashamed, Zep 3:5 nor received instruction, nor took warning by the judgments of God on other nations, Zep 3:6,7 wherefore the followers of God are called upon to wait his time, who would gather many people together, and destroy the whole land of Judea, Zep 3:8 at which time he would send his Gospel among the Gentiles, who should thereby be brought to the true worship and service of God, Zep 3:9,10 though there should be a remnant among the Jews, according to the election of grace, that should be saved from that general calamity, Zep 3:11-13 and the spiritual Israel are encouraged with promises of better times, when the Jews in general should be converted and gathered into the church of God, have the presence and protection of God with them, and deliverance from all their enemies, and be a praise among all people of the earth, Zep 3:14-20.
