1 I said, "I will watch my ways¹ and keep my tongue from sin;² I will put a muzzle on my mouth³ as long as the wicked are in my presence." 2 But when I was silent⁴ and still, not even saying anything good, my anguish⁵ increased. 3 My heart grew hot⁶ within me, and as I meditated,⁷ the fire⁸ burned; then I spoke with my tongue: 4 "Show me, O LORD, my life's end and the number of my days;⁹ let me know how fleeting¹⁰ is my life.¹¹ 5 You have made my days¹² a mere handbreadth; the span of my years is as nothing before you. Each man's life is but a breath.¹³ "Selah" 6 Man is a mere phantom¹⁴ as he goes to and fro:¹⁵ He bustles about, but only in vain;¹⁶ he heaps up wealth,¹⁷ not knowing who will get it.¹⁸ 7 "But now, Lord, what do I look for? My hope is in you.¹⁹
