I looked, and there before me was a white horse!1 Its rider held a bow, and he was given a crown,2 and he rode out as a conqueror bent on conquest.33
When the Lamb opened the second seal, I heard the second living creature4 say, "Come!"
Then another horse came out, a fiery red one.5 Its rider was given power to take peace from the earth6 and to make men slay each other. To him was given a large sword.
When the Lamb opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature7 say, "Come!" I looked, and there before me was a black horse!8 Its rider was holding a pair of scales in his hand.
Then I heard what sounded like a voice among the four living creatures,9 saying, "A quarta of wheat for a day's wages,b and three quarts of barley for a day's wages,c10 and do not damage11 the oil and the wine!"
When the Lamb opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth living creature12 say, "Come!"
I looked, and there before me was a pale horse!13 Its rider was named Death, and Hades14 was following close behind him. They were given power over a fourth of the earth to kill by sword, famine and plague, and by the wild beasts of the earth.159
When he opened the fifth seal, I saw under16 the altar17 the souls of those who had been slain18 because of the word of God19 and the testimony they had maintained.
They called out in a loud voice, "How long,20 Sovereign Lord,21 holy and true,22 until you judge the inhabitants of the earth23 and avenge our blood?"2411
Then each of them was given a white robe,25 and they were told to wait a little longer, until the number of their fellow servants and brothers who were to be killed as they had been was completed.2612
I watched as he opened the sixth seal. There was a great earthquake.27 The sun turned black28 like sackcloth29 made of goat hair, the whole moon turned blood red,
