Mark 13:22

22 For there will rise up false Christs and false prophets: and they shall shew signs and wonders, to seduce (if it were possible) even the elect.

Mark 13:22 Meaning and Commentary

Mark 13:22

For false Christs and false prophets shall rise
As there did, both before and after the destruction of Jerusalem:

and shall show signs and wonders;
as they pretended to do, and did, at least to the appearance of people:

to seduce, if it were possible, even the elect;
who were chosen in Christ, unto eternal life; in consequence of which they truly believed in him, and were constant followers of him; but this was not possible: though such was the force of their deception, that there was apparent danger of it, were it not for the power and grace of God; (See Gill on Matthew 24:24).

Mark 13:22 In-Context

20 And unless the Lord had shortened the days, no flesh should be saved: but, for the sake of the elect which he hath chosen, he hath shortened the days.
21 And then if any man shall say to you: Lo, here is Christ. Lo, he is here: do not believe.
22 For there will rise up false Christs and false prophets: and they shall shew signs and wonders, to seduce (if it were possible) even the elect.
23 Take you heed therefore: behold, I have foretold you all things.
24 But in those days, after that tribulation, the sun shall be darkened and the moon shall not give her light.
