Luke 8:50

But when Jesus heard it
The message that was brought to the ruler, and the hint that was given, that it was needless to give him any further trouble:

he answered him;
not the messenger, but the father of the child, as the Vulgate Latin, Syriac, Persic, and Ethiopic versions read:

saying, fear not:
do not be dismayed at this message, nor despair of help, notwithstanding such is the case:

believe only, and she shall be made whole;
exercise faith in me, that I am able to raise her from the dead, and I will do it; and she shall be restored to life, and to perfect health and strength again.

49 While he was still speaking, a man from the ruler's house came and said, "Your daughter is dead; do not trouble the Teacher any more."

50 But Jesus on hearing this answered him, "Do not fear; only believe, and she shall be well."

51 And when he came to the house, he permitted no one to enter with him, except Peter and John and James, and the father and mother of the child.

52 And all were weeping and bewailing her; but he said, "Do not weep; for she is not dead but sleeping."
