Psalms 139:2-24

You 1know when I sit down and when I rise up; You 2understand my thought from afar.
You 3scrutinize my path and my lying down, And are intimately acquainted with all my ways.
Even before there is a word on my tongue, Behold, O LORD, You 4know it all.
You have 5enclosed me behind and before, And 6laid Your hand upon me.
Such 7knowledge is 8too wonderful for me; It is too high, I cannot * attain to it.
9Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence?
10If I ascend to heaven, You are there; If I make my bed in Sheol, behold, 11You are there.
If I take the wings of the dawn, If I dwell in the remotest part of the sea,
Even there Your hand will 12lead me, And Your right hand will lay hold of me.
If I say, "Surely the 13darkness will overwhelm me, And the light around me will be night,"
Even the 14darkness is not dark to You, And the night is as bright as the day. 15Darkness and light are alike to You.
For You 16formed my inward parts; You 17wove me in my mother's womb.
I will give thanks to You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; 18Wonderful are Your works, And my soul knows it very well.
My 19frame was not hidden from You, When I was made in secret, And skillfully wrought in the 20depths of the earth;
Your 21eyes have seen my unformed substance; And in 22Your book were all written The 23days that were ordained for me, When as yet there was not one of them.
How precious also are Your 24thoughts to me, O God! How vast is the sum of them!
If I should count them, they would 25outnumber the sand. When 26I awake, I am still with You.
O that You would 27slay the wicked, O God; 28Depart from me, therefore, 29men of bloodshed.
For they 30speak against You wickedly, And Your enemies 31take Your name in vain.
Do I not 32hate those who hate You, O LORD? And do I not 33loathe those who rise up against You?
I hate them with the utmost hatred; They have become my enemies.
34Search me, O God, and know my heart; 35Try me and know my anxious thoughts;
And see if there be any 36hurtful way in me, And 37lead me in the 38everlasting way.

Psalms 139:2-24 Meaning and Commentary

To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David. This psalm was written by David, when he lay under the reproach and calumnies of men, who laid false things to his charge; things he was not conscious of either in the time of Saul's persecution of him, or when his son Absalom rebelled against him: and herein he appeals to the heart searching and rein trying God for his innocence; and, when settled on his throne, delivered it to the master of music, to make use of it on proper occasions. According to the Syriac title of the psalm, the occasion of it was Shimei, the son of Gera, reproaching and cursing him as a bloody man, 2 Samuel 16:5. Theodoret takes it to be a prophecy of Josiah, and supposes that he is represented as speaking throughout the psalm. Aben Ezra observes, that this is the most glorious and excellent psalm in all the book: a very excellent one it is: but whether the most excellent, it is hard to say. It treats of some of the most glorious of the divine perfections; omniscience, omnipresence, and omnipotence. Arama says, the argument of it is God's particular knowledge of men, and his providence over their affairs.
