Doing What Is Good

1 Remind the people to be subject to rulers and authorities,1 to be obedient, to be ready to do whatever is good,2 2 to slander no one,3 to be peaceable and considerate, and to show true humility toward all men. 3 At one time4 we too were foolish, disobedient, deceived and enslaved by all kinds of passions and pleasures. We lived in malice and envy, being hated and hating one another. 4 But when the kindness5 and love of God our Savior6 appeared,7 5 he saved us,8 not because of righteous things we had done,9 but because of his mercy.10 He saved us through the washing11 of rebirth and renewal12 by the Holy Spirit, 6 whom he poured out on us13 generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, 7 so that, having been justified by his grace,14 we might become heirs15 having the hope16 of eternal life.17 8 This is a trustworthy saying.18 And I want you to stress these things, so that those who have trusted in God may be careful to devote themselves to doing what is good.19 These things are excellent and profitable for everyone. 9 But avoid20 foolish controversies and genealogies and arguments and quarrels21 about the law,22 because these are unprofitable and useless.23 10 Warn a divisive person once, and then warn him a second time. After that, have nothing to do with him.24 11 You may be sure that such a man is warped and sinful; he is self-condemned.
