Jacob left Beersheba1 and set out for Harran.211
When he reached a certain place,3 he stopped for the night because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones there, he put it under his head4 and lay down to sleep.
He had a dream5 in which he saw a stairwaya resting on the earth, with its top reaching to heaven, and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it.613
There above itb stood the LORD,7 and he said: "I am the LORD, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac.8 I will give you and your descendants the land9 on which you are lying.1014
Your descendants will be like the dust of the earth, and you11 will spread out to the west and to the east, to the north and to the south.12 All peoples on earth will be blessed through you and your offspring.c1315
I am with you14 and will watch over you1516 wherever you go,17 and I will bring you back to this land.18 I will not leave you19 until I have done what I have promised you.20"2116
When Jacob awoke from his sleep,22 he thought, "Surely the LORD is in this place, and I was not aware of it."
He was afraid and said, "How awesome is this place!23 This is none other than the house of God;24 this is the gate of heaven."
Early the next morning Jacob took the stone he had placed under his head25 and set it up as a pillar26 and poured oil on top of it.2719
He called that place Bethel,d28 though the city used to be called Luz.2920
Then Jacob made a vow,30 saying, "If God will be with me and will watch over me31 on this journey I am taking and will give me food to eat and clothes to wear3221
so that I return safely33 to my father's household,34 then the LORD e will be my God3522
andf this stone that I have set up as a pillar36 will be God's house,37 and of all that you give me I will give you a tenth.38"
