Additional Warning to the Priests

1 "And now, you priests, this warning is for you.1 2 If you do not listen,2 and if you do not resolve to honor3 my name," says the LORD Almighty, "I will send a curse4 on you, and I will curse your blessings.5 Yes, I have already cursed them, because you have not resolved to honor me. 3 "Because of you I will rebuke your descendantsa; I will smear on your faces the dung6 from your festival sacrifices, and you will be carried off with it.7 4 And you will know that I have sent you this warning so that my covenant with Levi8 may continue," says the LORD Almighty. 5 "My covenant was with him, a covenant9 of life and peace,10 and I gave them to him; this called for reverence11 and he revered me and stood in awe of my name. 6 True instruction12 was in his mouth and nothing false was found on his lips. He walked13 with me in peace14 and uprightness,15 and turned many from sin.16 7 "For the lips of a priest17 ought to preserve knowledge, because he is the messenger18 of the LORD Almighty and people seek instruction from his mouth.19 8 But you have turned from the way20 and by your teaching have caused many to stumble;21 you have violated the covenant22 with Levi,"23 says the LORD Almighty. 9 "So I have caused you to be despised24 and humiliated25 before all the people, because you have not followed my ways but have shown partiality26 in matters of the law."27

Breaking Covenant Through Divorce

10 Do we not all have one Fatherb ?28 Did not one God create us?29 Why do we profane the covenant30 of our ancestors by being unfaithful31 to one another? 11 Judah has been unfaithful. A detestable32 thing has been committed in Israel and in Jerusalem: Judah has desecrated the sanctuary the LORD loves33 by marrying34 women who worship a foreign god.35 12 If anyone does this, whoever he may be, may the LORD remove36 him from the tents of Jacobc37--even though he brings an offering38 to the LORD Almighty. 13 Another thing you do: You flood the LORD's altar with tears.39 You weep and wail40 because he no longer looks with favor41 on your offerings or accepts them with pleasure from your hands.42 14 You ask,43 "Why?" It is because the LORD is the witness44 between you and the wife of your youth.45 You have been unfaithful to her, though she is your partner, the wife of your marriage covenant.46 15 Has not the LORD made the two of you one?47 You belong to him in body and spirit. And why has he made you one? Because he was seeking godly offspring.d48 So be on your guard,49 and do not be unfaithful50 to the wife of your youth. 16 "I hate divorce,51" says the LORD God of Israel, "and I hate it when people clothe themselves with injustice,"52 says the LORD Almighty. So be on your guard,53 and do not be unfaithful.

Breaking Covenant Through Injustice

17 You have wearied54 the LORD with your words. "How have we wearied him?" you ask.55 By saying, "All who do evil are good in the eyes of the LORD, and he is pleased56 with them" or "Where is the God of justice?57"
