Then Moses and Aaron fell facedown1 in front of the whole Israelite assembly2 gathered there.
Joshua son of Nun3 and Caleb son of Jephunneh, who were among those who had explored the land, tore their clothes47
and said to the entire Israelite assembly, "The land we passed through and explored is exceedingly good.58
If the LORD is pleased with us,6 he will lead us into that land, a land flowing with milk and honey,7 and will give it to us.89
Only do not rebel9 against the LORD. And do not be afraid10 of the people of the land,11 because we will devour them. Their protection is gone, but the LORD is with12 us.13 Do not be afraid of them."1410
But the whole assembly talked about stoning15 them. Then the glory of the LORD16 appeared at the tent of meeting to all the Israelites.
The LORD said to Moses, "How long will these people treat me with contempt?17 How long will they refuse to believe in me,18 in spite of all the signs19 I have performed among them?
I will strike them down with a plague20 and destroy them, but I will make you into a nation21 greater and stronger than they."2213
Moses said to the LORD, "Then the Egyptians will hear about it! By your power you brought these people up from among them.2314
And they will tell the inhabitants of this land about it. They have already heard24 that you, LORD, are with these people25 and that you, LORD, have been seen face to face,26 that your cloud stays over them,27 and that you go before them in a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night.2815
If you put these people to death all at one time, the nations who have heard this report about you will say,
