It will belong to the remnant1 of the house of Judah; there they will find pasture. In the evening they will lie down in the houses of Ashkelon. The LORD their God will care for them; he will restore their fortunes.a2
"I have heard the insults3 of Moab4 and the taunts of the Ammonites,5 who insulted6 my people and made threats against their land.79
Therefore, as surely as I live," declares the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel, "surely Moab8 will become like Sodom,9 the Ammonites10 like Gomorrah-- a place of weeds and salt pits, a wasteland forever. The remnant of my people will plunder11 them; the survivors12 of my nation will inherit their land.13"
This is what they will get in return for their pride,14 for insulting15 and mocking the people of the LORD Almighty.1611
The LORD will be awesome17 to them when he destroys all the gods18 of the land.19 The nations on every shore will worship him,20 every one in its own land.
He will stretch out his hand against the north and destroy Assyria,23 leaving Nineveh24 utterly desolate and dry as the desert.2514
Flocks and herds26 will lie down there, creatures of every kind. The desert owl27 and the screech owl2829 will roost on her columns. Their calls will echo through the windows, rubble will be in the doorways, the beams of cedar will be exposed.
This is the carefree30 city that lived in safety.31 She said to herself, "I am, and there is none besides me."32 What a ruin she has become, a lair for wild beasts!33 All who pass by her scoff34 and shake their fists.35
