Jesus Is Mocked
16 1And the soldiers led him away inside
2the palace (that is,
3the governor's headquarters), and they called together the whole
4battalion.
17
And they clothed him in
5a purple cloak, and twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on him.
18
And they began to salute him,
6"Hail, King of the Jews!"
19
And they were striking his head with a reed and
7spitting on him and
8kneeling down in homage to him.
20
And when they had
9mocked him, they stripped him of
10the purple cloak and put his own clothes on him. And they
11led him out to crucify him.
The Crucifixion
21 12And they compelled a passerby, Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to carry his cross.
22
13And they brought him to the place called Golgotha (which means Place of a Skull).
23
And they offered him wine mixed with
14myrrh, but he did not take it.
24
And they crucified him and
15divided his garments among them, casting lots for them, to decide what each should take.
25
And
16it was the third hour when they crucified him.
26
And the inscription of the charge against him read,
17"The King of the Jews."
27
And with him they crucified two
18robbers,
19one on his right and one on his left.
29
And
20those who passed by derided him,
21wagging their heads and saying,
22"Aha!
23You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days,
30
save yourself, and come down from the cross!"
31
So also the chief priests with the scribes mocked him to one another, saying,
24"He saved others;
25he cannot save himself.
32
Let
26the Christ,
27the King of Israel, come down now from the cross that we may
28see and believe."
29Those who were crucified with him also reviled him.
